I don't know the extent of the truth of their methods, but I was taught in my history class (in Turkey) that some of the "deliler" (crazies) brigades were trained specifically for slapping. From when they were small children, these guys with what was probably learning difficulties were trained to hit marble slabs with their hands for hours every day. They would pour some olive oil on the marbles and then slap them. When battle started, the deliler (crazies) would be the first to attack, as a means to demoralize the enemy. The sight of these "crazy people" running to their deaths with their weapon being slapping would scare the enemies. I even heard of a story where the crazies would slap the horses of the incoming cavalry and down them. That much is probably made up, but I know the Ottomans used the crazies as "shock troops" when starting a battle.

Even the Ottoman soldiers, called 'Deli', would have a shield with them for protection or attack the enemy directly with their bare hands. to give additional information, they used to train by slapping oiled marble to keep their hands for getting calluses (some soldiers were strong enough to break even oiled marble☠️). To throw this slap, most of the power would be given to the shoulder and slapped with all your strength.
