Just a foot note. If you look at Rochester Castle today, you will see that the Keep has 3 square corners and 1 rounded corner. This is because, after the seige the corner that collapsed was rebuilt rounded. This was an upgrade due to the invention of the trebuchet as it deflected the missile's better than a flat faced wall.

Amazing story and movie; phenomenal.

“You fought bravely.”
“Is killing a noble thing?
…But a Life fought for Others is Life worth-living; THAT is a noble-thing.”

Ugly trivia fact: in the movies the living gently close the eyelids of the dead. Unfortunately I've had occasion to try it 3 times; in each case the eyelids popped back open. The first was damnably distressing.

Excellent. Like a video was made during a real battle! Very convincing. This must be a British film with its powerful subtlety and understatement. Superb actors without all the usual glitter and razzmatazz of a Hollywood movie.

Wonderfully filmed and directed. Wish they had made a series of it.

Intriguing plot. Great characters exceptionally well-acted. Direction, cinematography, production design and costumes. One major problem: the dialogue is barely audible.

The absolute cream of British period actors, decent props, good fights, fair historical accuracy, good character interactions. This is a good movie. (bloodthirsty 12+)

Contrary to popular belief, the Magna Carta didn't give freedom to the commonwealth it gave freedoms to the Nobility/Barons.
In broad terms the Magna Carta was an agreement between the King and the Nobility, the Nobles agreed to let the king continue his rule if he observed the common law and the traditional rights of both the Barons and the Church, it protected the rights and privileges of the Nobility, not the commonwealth, do people really think these guys cared for the peasants? That they were going to give up their power? 🤭This was only the early Middle Ages, it soon got much worse for the average commoner. It was also pretty obvious soon after the Magna Carta was signed, that neither side was going go along with the charter, the rebels were supposed to stand down and give the city of London back to the king (which the rebels occupied early that year (1215)), in which they did neither, it was inevitable that war was imminent and the Magna Carta just accelerated tensions to the point where both the rebels and the King were hell bent on going to war. Its also pretty interesting that John had the full support of the Pope (Innocent III) the same pope who excommunicated John in 1209 after placing England under an "interdict" (enforcement of closing all churches, prohibited the administration of the Catholic sacraments and forbade using any churchyards for burial) It shows how back then during that time, support from the papacy (much like loyalty) in general depended on if the temperature outside was hot or cold.

The movie is pretty good and Paul Giamatti does an admirable job in playing King John l, overall the movie i would say is a bit underrated.
What a brute this guy was, England has had its share of tyrant monarchs and John was certainly no exception, its pretty ironic that King John contracted dysentery and died less than a year after this particular conflict (First Barons' war).

Towards the end of the Movie where they use pigs to detonate a mine under the castle, this has to be the first instance of mass produced charred pork chops in recorded history.

The Magna Carta isn't the only attempt by the Nobility to limit the powers of the monarchy. The "ordinances of 1311" imposed on Edward ll was very similar, as it was an attempt by the church and Nobility (or the "peerage") to restrict the powers of the king, though it obviously was never upheld. It just further shows how unstable the relationship between the King and the Nobility was and that tensions between the monarchy and Nobility always existed.

Probably the best representation of half-swording in any movie or show ever. It's rare enough to begin with.
