I definitely jumped in head first and thought I knew way more than I did. 7 years, 2 features and 4 shorts later, I am still learning but i feel like I'm entering stage 6. I just had my work read by actors for the first time last night at a table read, and received some notes from the amateur filmmakers/writers. It was an extremely helpful and enlightening experience to hear it from different voices, and to receive real constructive criticism from non-friends/family. I have definitely learned more from writing and failing, but I still watch videos like these as part of my morning routine. A sort of daily motivational before my writing session. Some days there is content relevant to what I'm working on, and some days not.

I hate my work, so there's hope. Yessss! Thank you Tyler for this new perspective. I nearly quit. 🤣

Being self critical is VERY important at every stage as a filmmaker, but at a certain point, if someone hates their own work on a constant basis, it might just not be good. It's important to take pride in your work because YOU will always be your biggest cheerleader. Having some confidence in your work isn't a bad thing. A first draft might lack good format or structure, but a good story is a good story. Even if it is your first script.

I'm between Stage 4 and 5. Getting that first draft done (even though it's still not good) and printing it off has been the biggest step to making me feel like a "proper" screenwriter rather than just someone with ideas.

Great video. It really worked to put everything into perspective for me. Right now I’m stuck in stage 4. I have a list of notes on my completed first draft, but I have lost the motivation to implement the edits into draft 2. I told myself I would get this script done and edited to the best I can make it, but I’m starting to see it might just be better to start a new story using what I have learned.

It's good to feel positive about your work, but you also have to be positive about knowing you can improve your own work, via feedback from others or otherwise. The worst thing is stagnation, either from "this sucks, I give up" and stopping OR " this is perfect" and stubbornly rejecting feedback.

Hi I’ve been watching videos mainly the series on writing a TV show we’re you use breaking bad as an example which is my favourite show, I’ve only recently got into screen writing but without your help I would be very far behind. Your knowledge has helped me so much so thankyou, I hope to finish my first script soon :)

You have to make it primary focus. Cant do it on the side. You will progress fast that way. Ive written one in last few months and currently close to finishing two more over last month or so. You get better at generating good ideas as well as the structural stuff. Before i was writing for years on the side and got nowhere.

I think instead of just writing, I would do a combination of writing and reflecting. I would then use that reflecting to help figure out the next topic to search on.

I also like the idea of taking notes on videos, then trying to condense those notes into an actionable tool for some part of a script.

Another note is to find the sources that provide the highest amount of actionable notes. One source I love is a book called "The Story Solution" by Eric Edson. I am also reading a beautiful book on transitions called "Between The Scenes" by Jeffrey Michael Bays that isn't as dense but has some great ideas as an honorable mention.

In stage 1, when we are just writing shorts willy nilly, should we do outlines for em? Or just knock ‘em out

Your every single video is very useful for coming up with great production. I recently came up with my idea for a short film. When I had researched that idea, I found the same idea done by someone before. What should I do?

I'm only 4 min in but this is already so helpful. Thanks SO MUCH! I've gotten stuck on the outline lol.

Even if your first script is pretty good, its safe to assume its not and get a second opinion always.
