Lets face it, no one likes spending a lot of money on their power supply. What happens if you cheap out and don't get enough power for your system? Well lets find out!

Power supply wattage show how much it can output, not consume. So if your power supply is not 80 PLUS Titanium, you not overload it

Good video! I actually had my first power related issue this week, couldn't boot despite having a 500W PSU and all the parts being under that requirement. New GPU? Fixed the issue! GPU worked in another pc with a power wattage PSU. Crazy times! Great video though, really glad someone other than me put their parts at risk to find out what happens 😁

I've just run into this issue. Replaced a GTX 960 with a RTX 3060TI OC and when I ran a benchmark test on it, the PC shut down with a 630w PSU, which is a little over 12 years old at this point (go Raidmax! ;) ).
I tried reducing the GPU clock speed, but it didn't help. Headed out to pick up a Corsair 750w. Hopefully, that fixes it. Thanks for the demo!! :)

Thanks! Super helpful just wanted to make sure I'm not gonna fry my computer when I put my new parts in if the PSU is not quite enough. Didn't know about the power supply calculators either, really helpful information!

i'm just now arguing with a guy that insists it's a waste to buy "more than you need" and says that it's okay to load your psu to the brink while GAMING. the guy isn't even thinking about full load, he says you should just see what your pc uses during game and buy a tight fit for that.
ugh.

psu is actually alot interesting to me, and that's why i search for videos like this one, Thank you for the explanation video

But you didn't actually exceed the power supply's rated power draw. If you took 660 W from the wall and the psu efficiency is 85% it means its actual output was 660*0.85=561 W. It was running fine and well below maximum.

Fun video,

Any power supply worth its salt shoud shut down well before it burns or causes damage to any components.

As it has been for years dont trust the psu label theres alot of cheep power supplies with ocp turnd off or set way to high as well as dangerous levels of ripple and voltage over/undershoot.

The best place to find info on psus quick and easy would be the latest psu tier list thread on ltt fourms.

Rated psu power is the output power! Depending on efficiency the psu will pull more from the wall.

I'm running a 5700x3d and 5700 xt with 64gb ram and a few SSDs and HDDs. Powered by a 450w corsair PSU.
some games pull 425W consistently, and every now and then the pc shuts down without warning. When I run prime95 and furmark it hits 550W while the CPU and GPU are both undervolted. I'm sure it could reach 600w at stock voltage. It crashes after about 30 seconds at 550W.
New PSU is being ordered lol.

I just blew up my hp psu server 1200w and i have no idea why it can happen. I'm surely check all the component (mining rig) doesn't surpass 1200w because it's only 3xRX5700 (maybe the whole system just draw 500-600 watt). My question is..are psu server with breakoutboard dont have any safety feature like atx?and what kind of mistake that make psu end up exploding like a firecracker if its not caused by overload?
Sorry for my bad english btw
And keep up the good content like this 👌

My PSU blew because i forgot to switch it from 110V to 250V lmao

The lights in my room started to flicker and my psu started buzzing

I bought a 450w for a i5 3470 and planning to add a gpu, but then I remembered that the psu bought has no pcie cables I should have picked a 500w for future upgrades. Lol

Thank you for this video, I just saw this behavior with my system, I can confidently say my psu is insufficient

So two days in a row my PC restarted on its own. 2 times it happened while playing MW3 warzone. Once was on the desk top when I opened Steam. System is a 5800X3D, GPU is a 6950Xt. PSU is an 850W gold. Something is going on but I dont know what. I monitor the Temps and the temps all appear to be pretty Low… any thoughts? 850w “should” be enough for the system… but maybe its not?

would have been nice to see a power supply tester and see whether the voltages remained a) the same, b) within spec

If you shorted out the power supply, would it just explode or catch on fire?

Good video. Any power supply if in an overload condition would go into an over current condition and due to the circuit of the power supply should shut down automatically. These are factored in the design.
