Watch mistake #11: Kids.
In my case, my elementary students I teach. Handed it to a curious youngster to look and she dropped it on the marble floor within 2 seconds. Glad she was only like 4 ft tall, but that was scary.

Thanks for the warnings! The best advice I've seen on date change is to change the date when the hour is in the lower half of the watch because no mechanisms are engaged at that time. I set a reminder on my phone, every month that has less than 31 days, to remind me on the first of the following month at my usual wake time so the first time I look at my watch (Edit: phone, not watch) after waking up I see the notice.

This is good to know especially since I just recently bought a luxury watch. I agree with your point of view regarding the routine maintenance of a watch. If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it.
