The Scholar's Mate (or the Fool's Mate or the early queen attack) is the most disrespectful attempt of your opponents to checkmate you.

Many might think that only complete beginners would ever try this lame chess trick. However, the reality is completely different; almost 10 million players have tried the Scholar's Mate or early queen attack. In fact, it is the second most played move by White in the opening position after 1.e4 e5.

In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov will share with you a simple, yet brutal way to counter this early queen attack. And because it's simple, you can learn this counter-trick very easily without having to spend much time memorizing different variations.

My father taught me to play chess some 45 odd years ago and I'm just picking it up again at 60. These tutorials are helping me to understand the game in a way that I never did before. Your style is fun, engaging and accessible ... AND your passion for the game is evident. A chess GM, and a world class coach! Thanks for bringing your A game.

The fool's mate and the scholar's mate are two different variations.

The fool's mate is 4 moves total with the black queen providing the solo check make.

The scholar is using the bishop in conjunction with the queen to provide a checkmate in 7 moves roughly.

This is so helpful, I come back to it time and again because maybe 25% of black games are against the Scholar's mate at my 300-500 level

Offering a Queen trade is my way of playing it since if they go to like G3 you can just play QG6 and they are most likely unwilling to trade, lots of opponents just resign because they are so frustrated that such a simple reply counters their idea, wherever they go with the queen you can either develop or offer the same trade as long as you avoid the 3 fold repetition.

Love the early queen trade idea. Could you do please do a video on the Hedgehog Defense I see played by many strong players?

There are so many ideas to look at here. I was going to say b5 ab Bx5 Nxb3+ an if the K stays with his center pawn fork with Nd4+ and next NxB. But then I wondered about Rook takes pawn and when the B captures pin it with the other rook. After Rxe3 seems like a big attack. Hopefully I said it so as not to sound as if I am sure.

5:55 the best move i can find is trading the light squared bishop for the pawn, alowing the knight to take the pawn on b3, so 2 pawns for a bishop

This puzzle is the first I've seen on this channel that has stumped me for longer than a few minutes. I'll come back to it tomorrow with a fresh mind and see if I can work out the answer as I don't think any of the current responses are correct.

I think I'd benefit a lot from your course, but I can't afford it atm. I'll probably have to look at that sometime in the future as well.

Love your videos, Igor.

Nxb3 if bishop captures then Rd3 is possible

Nxb3+ and if Bxb3 then Rxd3+ and the white position collapses

Nxd5 isn't a good move, because it's basically 2 minor pieces for a rook, and 2 minor pieces usually out perform one rook even though it's just a 1 point difference
others might ask me "but your knight on a1 is still alive, which means its 1 piece for a rook" well, no. if the opponent plays the right moves, they won't let your knight to escape, which isn't good either

that's why you either refute the fried liver with the traxler, or castle, so you win 2 pieces for a rook

5:57 Knight takes b3 check, if he takes your knight with bishop then you take on d3 with rook check. King moves and you take knight on c3 with you bishop.

Lately, bumped into common strat against White. Their 4 first moves: e4, Nc3, Bc4 and Qg4(!). Since we all play Rousseau Gambit, our move order is e5, Nc6 and Bc5 accordingly, but then pnly thanks to Stockfish continuation is known (Nd4) but still it leads to losing a pawn... Any ideas here?

Nxb3+ which captures a pawn and removes the defender of d3 after Bxb3. Then you're rook can take on d3 with check and you'll be left with two attackers of the knight on c3 with only one defender, so you can win it.

Isn’t Fool’s Mate f3/4 -> e6/5 -> g4 -> qh4#

I also noticed that if you move your knight to f3 threatening their Queen you can get them to freak out about losing their Queen while your calm and continuing your development and by the time they get the Queen out of the way your usually completely developed and their queens has been making a majority of the moves

The latest version of Stockfish recommends d6 instead of Nc6 on move 2.
