Something Weird Happened with NASA Orion’s Heat Shield. SpaceX Dragon to Replace...
NASA is not a model of openness when it comes to addressing issues in its projects.
A prime example is the case of this year's Boeing Starliner crewed flight test when the space agency tended to downplay serious problems on the Starliner spacecraft.
This is pretty similar to what happened in the Orion's heat shield investigation following the Artemis 1's return mission. Yes, at present, Nasa knows exactly what went wrong and how to fix it, but they are treating it all as a secret.
Is something really bad happening here?
If it goes true, is it time to bring SpaceX's old special project, Dragon XL back from the dead under a new version?
Find out everything in today's episode.
Something Weird Happened with NASA Orion’s Heat Shield. SpaceX Dragon to Replace...
Nasa's Artemis program, as a reincarnation of the now-canceled Constellation program, is increasingly mired in trouble even though it has just started.
Prior to the unpiloted Artemis 1 test flight in late 2022, Nasa's SLS rocket, Artemis's main launch vehicle was criticized for its cost overruns and delays. Additionally, during the reentry of the Orion spacecraft under Artemis 1, its heatshield was detected to be cracked and chipped away, what caused it became a burning question.
The persistent investigation into the heat shield issue forced Nasa in January to announce a delay in the launch of Artemis 2 from late 2024 until September 2025.
Something Weird Happened with NASA Orion’s Heat Shield. SpaceX Dragon to Replace...
Finally, hard work pays off, NASA currently knows what caused the erosion of the Orion spacecraft’s heat shield following its historic trip to the Moon in 2022. However, what confuses us the most is Nasa's weird silence.
“We have conclusive determination of what the root cause is of the issue,” Lori Glaze, acting deputy associate administrator at NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, said. But, “I’m not going to share right now, when it comes out, it will all come out together.”
After the root cause analysis is done, the space agency will be running additional tests to mitigate the crew capsule’s erosion during atmospheric reentry, which will be completed by the end of November. This clearly shows that they know exactly what is wrong and how to fix it going forward. Nevertheless, there is a problem the heat shield for Orion that’s going to be used for Artemis 2 has already been installed at the bottom of the crew capsule, therefore replacing any of its components would require undoing the spacecraft. This would certainly delay the Artemis 2 mission by a year or more.

They've been putting heat shields on space ships since the 1950's ! What the hell happened ? Did somebody lose the recipe ??? 😳😳😳

Apollo solved this problem by using a honeycomb substrate for its heat shield...Orion doesn't do that...they should.

Dragon xl could easily replace the gateway station for half the price and way less 🐂💩💩

Explain to me why falcon heavy is not human rated?

The weird thing that happened with Orion capsule was it was made by Boeing; everything else is consequence.

Space X have a potential of reviving a 'Dragon Xl' service module for replacing sls

I would bet starship could already make a moonshot.? With the right trajectory and rapter 3 engine's. Getting back may be a problem though. So land it and leave it there as a base? Just thinking 🤔

Another version of This is your government. We are here to help. We the people shell out more money. There are never any answers. We have given up. Sad.

Eventually there will be no Orio flight to the moon...
... the astronauts will do the Earth-Leo leg with the Dragon, board the Starship with which they will do Leo-Moon-Leo, and then return to the Dragon to return to Earth!
Next year in one of the IFTs they will do the docking test between the Cargo-Dragon and Starship to validate Dock&Undock, and then everything will be clear!

What about attatching everything inside the second stage of the disposable heavy to a framework and jettisoning the skin as well as the faring to reduce mass? I'm thinking of having extra cargo not humans? Like an old fashioned airship with engines but no fabric?

I won’t say my opinions are valuable but could be useful.

On the title about the heat shield you should have put the apostrophe s after Orion instead of shield. This immediately bothered me. But that’s just me.

NASA tried a new method for the heat shield but it didn’t work like they wanted. SpaceX could do it with their verified Starship heat shield method quickly if NASA asked. I expected the heat shields are separate parts that can be attached to the capsule.

Super Heavy is quite capable now to launch most of Artemis in one go. Also an entire station (if properly assembled) as well. NASA is being a little meek in news these days but not as bad as Blue Origin.

OMG, Dude you just said NASA knows what the problem is and how to fix it. That doesn't have anything to do with knowing the true root cause. Not that you have any chance of knowing that.

Apart from having to deal with Elon Musk anti-social behaviour i feel it would be more financially beneficial to have the Dragon XL project put back in place to re-start a lunar base. Forget Artemis, it was a thought bubble that existed before recent private industry innovation.
