I heard about the possible metallic core of Jupiter when I was about 15, in 1971.

What I DIDN'T hear, then, was the immense amount of water in the Solar System. Comets were thought to be "dirty ice" involving other frozen gases. Some speculated that there might be water ice out there. But the only known water was on the earth. Regarding the rest of the Solar System, it was seen as 'dry' re water presence.
