“They decided to skip a few steps” is never what I want to hear when talking about nuclear energy conversion.

By the way, let me clear up something that a lot of people mistake: The doctors did not keep him alive to experiment on him because he was a rare case. it was because his family wanted to cling onto any slim hope to save him, and the doctors did eventually talk them into signing a "Do not resuscitate" paper

Unfortunately, his family could not come to grips with the fact that Ouchi was beyond being salvageable. Prolonging his life for 83 days must've been pure torture for him. RIP Ouchi.

Ouchi isn’t actually the most radioactive man. That title belongs to Robert Peabody who was exposed to an estimated 100 RV’s of radiation. Robert was splashed with radioactive liquid that he was working with. His wedding alone ring revived 7 RV, s of radiation. The reason you haven’t heard of this is because Ouchi was kept alive longer and so he suffered for longer. While Robert only lived 49 hours so he suffered less.😢

"He felt okay" that's the scariest thing a death sentencing event can allow you to feel. The radium girls only complained of some headaches, jaw irritation before their jaws fell out. Watching your body rot away for over two months is actually horrifying, basically a living corpse.

This man was a beast, it took multiple organ failures to kill him, he survived through the initial gamma blast, kidney failure, lung filling with fluid, skin blistering and peeling off, blood transfusions, chromosome transport, and more.

Being "healthy" after such exposure, is like the Radiation's way of saying "enjoy your last few moments of life"

The most uncanny part of radiation poisoning is that you're just watching this person... Fall apart.

The scary part is that its just a innocent looking flash and once the dna is damaged there is nothing and nobody in the world to save you

a minor detail: the dreaded "blue flash" of supercriticality is *not* Cherenkov radiation. it's actually caused by the ionization of the air molecules themselves. the same thing was reportedly seen over the exposed core after the Chernobyl accident.

It’s Lowkey scary how long our body can take so much before dying

This is so fucking sad. No one should have to die like this. R.I.P Ouchi.

I read the book "A Slow Death: 83 Days of Radiation Sickness". Hisashi's family were good people. It's sad that they had to see their loved one die this way. I understand their wanting to hold out hope and not let go. Even through the pain, Hisashi did not complain or snap at people. Rest in Peace, Hisashi.

To clarify in case you wonder: The death of Hisashi Ouchi was caused by his stem cells being unable to divide and produce new adult cells for his body due to DNA-damage caused by the radiation. Him feeling good for some time after the accident is due to his current adult cells at that time still being alive. Once the adult cells died, there was no fresh replacement, eventually leading to death. Although the doctors managed to replace the stem cells in his bone marrow, different stem cells in other parts of the body like the intestine and the skin were still unable to divide and replace the dying adult cells. He was doomed from the moment he received the radiation.

This is literally one of the worst ways to die ever and this makes me feel so sad for this man kept alive against his will being alive while your body is dead is terrifying

The fact that he was breaking down at the cellular level, his nerve synapses were still able to send pain signals to his brain.
