If you are interested in this story, I'd recommend wendigoon's vid on this topic. It goes into more depth and detail than this or nearly any other vid on this story.

Long story short, the doctors were NOT keeping him alive to experiment on him. They were legit trying to save his life because they had gotten to know him and his family. His family knew there was a slim chance for him to live and took it. And most of all, hisashi wanted to live, because he loved his family. The medical staff and his family are not the villains.

My mother had cancer. The day that the doctors said that she will have far more bad days than good days she decided it was time to stop fighting it and not suffer any more. As our father was already gone it was just us kids and we all supported her in her dissension that she should not have to suffer more than she needs to. We all said our goodbyes and we let her go on her terms. It was really painful but I have never regretted my dissension on letting her go.

This whole video is untrue, and completely doesn't tell the story of what really happened. He and his family wanted to see him recover. There were all sorts of treatments done to save his life. The doctors assured that they would do whatever it took to save him. They tried all sorts of treatments including some that were incredibly advanced. He wanted to live and go home. Even the family would put paper cranes for each day they came to see him. Unfortunately, after those procedures he deteriorated even more. Then his heart stopped on the 81st day. They resuscitated him immediately because there was not an official do not resuscitate order. It was then the family was informed that he would never recover. They then signed a DNR, and after 83 days, he died after his heart stopped. The truth is always more realistic, and horrifying then infographics would ever make it.

There's a full video documentary out there of the doctor and hospital staff explaining how they knew the chances of him surviving were slim but they kept going out of respect for Hisashi's family. The doctor even explained that he allowed the family to frequently visit Hisashi so they could come to the devastating conclusion themselves. But the family kept hoping to the end that Hisashi would live; there were written records of them telling Hisashi to "stay strong", "hold on" and "don't give up". They were naive and the heartbreak was making them desperate, but they're not evil either. The only evil entity in this story is the corporation who wanted to cut corners for profit.

When all hope was lost, Dr. Maekawa sat the family down to explain the situation to them in detail. He was pragmatic but also empathetic while maintaining professionalism. He was the best guy for the job.

After the discussion, the family finally agreed to sign the DNR. Hisashi's wife later wrote a letter to the doctor, saying she feared this will happen again to someone and she wishes medicine would advance so no one would endure what her husband did. The doctor retitres but writes a book on how to treat such cases. The family also released all the records hoping it will be of help to society.

It's also sad that the workers got charged for negligence while the bosses were the ones who pressured them into this and had no regard for the safety of their workers which is part of their responsibility

This is monumentally disrespectful to the family and the doctors and a gross misrepresentation of the facts of the story.

Wow, that is horrible. Poor man, his pain must have been beyond unreal

The hospital was NOT a villain in this story. He wasn't kept alive against his own will. He wanted to live for his family.

Watch the Wendigoon video on this. Although he had moments of wanting to die, as I’m sure anyone would, he would come to his senses after the doctors and his family talked to him. He was fighting for his family to stay alive. His view along with his families was to try their absolute best to keep him alive. If you were a father and this happened to you would you just simply check out and not even have the chance to see your family again? I think most people would want to stay alive for their families.

*This was not the fault of the physicians to keep this man alive.*
If the family tells the physicians, and signs papers saying, that they refuse to accept a " *DNR* " or Do Not Resuscitate - that is the responsibility of the family.
HOWEVER .. This is power of decision is made *only* when the patient in question is incapacitated or mentally unfit to make that decision themselves.
The patient needs to have a "Power of Attorney" or defined "Will" that passes this responsibility to a specific person, or persons. Both of these things will only be adhered to if they are current/up to date and provided to the physicians.

Why do people always try to paint the doctors/nurses and family as the bad people here. I always get pretty sad when they try to say that they are the monsters for keeping him alive when they meant no ill will. Plus Ouchi wanted to stay alive for them anyway.

Stop trying to make the family and doctors look bad, he wanted to stay alive, he never said or indicated that he wanted to die

Honestly, I don't understand his familiy. He has received such a deadly dose of radiation and there was never a chance he would recover. I fully understand why you don't want a loved one to die, but I'd rather let a loved one go if there's no chance of survival rather than letting him/her suffer that much. It's beyond toture, no one deserves this.

The strange thing is that this vid actually seems pretty aligned with the true story, (at least slightly). The medical staff and the family wanted him to be happy, and his last wish before a breathing mask was put in him was for his doctors to keep him alive, and to never give up on him. Similarly, the family isn’t to blame. Although the lead doctor gave them a detailed rundown of everything, at one point, they couldn’t see how his body really looked, and couldn’t realize the severity.

By the end, Ouchi was more of a body, with dialysis machines for kidneys and being pumped with and elephant’s dose of drugs to play out the functions of a living thing.

I’d even go as far as saying it wasn’t the company’s fault. Although he didn’t really go into it, it wasn’t actually a nuclear reactor, but it was more like a factory where fuel rods were made. I mean, I think the higher ups might’ve known the risks legitimately, but definitely not Ouchi’s boss, because he was sitting at a table like three feet away when this was happening

And all across Japan at the time, there was a scourge of people not really knowing this stuff, and whenever Ouchi held a funnel for pouring the buckets of uranium, he was doing that by his own will,

Don’t get me wrong I’m *NOT* saying that this was in any way his fault, but it was by his will.
I just want to say that it’s sad that whenever you search up this topic, this vid pops up with the clickbait title.
All I’m saying is, the people we should really be mad at are to people who say this is the doctor’s fault, or the family’s. They saw this insane story about doctors and a family trying to help a man survive the worlds worst recorded case of radiation— anything— and they said

“that’s not nearly interesting enough, what if the doctors were eViL?”

That’s the same mindset illumination had with the Lorax, and we know how that turned out,

Btw, if you want to find a more elaborate source of information that goes ALOT deeper, go watch Wendigoon’s feature length video on this, but I’ll warn you, it is kinda sad.

Btw good job for reading the whole thing, or just scrolling down idk

The family is to blame for this. Keeping him a full code. They should be ashamed of themselves. I see this way too often. When I worked in Hawaii, there was a huge Japanese population and family members kept their parents alive and tortured on feeding tubes for decades. It makes me angry.

you cannot blame the family or the hospital in this situation. if the family's hopefulness and the doctors treatment ended up saving him, they would've been painted as heroes. just because he ended up dying, doesn't mean you can paint everyone else as evil.

So poorly informed I almost want to report the vid as misinformation.
