Question -

For home karaoke (played via Youtube), mixer with 2 mics (channels 1-2), if I want add external reverb and compressor, is it better to connect directly to channels 1-2, or use fx send?

Obviously the song/karaoke played from Youtube already has been mixes/mastered. Does not make sense to add reverb/compression on top of that.

The problem is that one doesn't have many affordable and good options for external effects processors on the current market, except for the very expensive and complex effects processors.
Many good manufacturers, sadly, discontinued their rack effects processor lineup, either becayse of greed or because they wrongly assumed that almost anyone will use conputers to mix inside the box.
On the other hand, if you are thinking of using effect pedals, think again. Effects pedals are designed to use instrument levels and their inputs have high impedance, whilst the mixingboards uses uses line level signals, which are stronger than instrument levels. This forces you to use reamping devices, to bring the levels down and, ultimately affects the sound signature.
In order to properly use external effects units with mixing desks, you have to use the aux send and return paths and you have to work at line level.
The moment you bring up a microphone signal or instrument signal to line level, you keep it there and any further processing has to happen at line level.

thank you for this great example of inserts and mixers. The mixer I have has compressors built in on 16 channels and reverb for all channels with 20 presets! its the Mackie ProFX30v3. Do you have any experience with this brand and mixer?

if your trs Y cable is not marked...with most modern cheap mulyimeters that have continuity tesrting...you easily figure it out. I've had to test mine a few time...i always forget. it makes me feel like i know what i'm doing haha
