In this video i attempt to go in depth on colonizing Shiitake blocks. Shiitake can be brutal to fully get the hang of and you never fully have them under control. Hopefully, this video will help broaden your knowledge of what makes good Shiitake blocks....Colonization.

Thank you i enjoyed your video, we commercially grow shiitake, mainly 3782 and have our cycles down for every week, .We also have found a 4 week rotation of blocks after 1st flush for a second fruiting which we initiate after soak and then put in separate fruiting room, This has been valuable addition to our production . once again thanks,

This man is in sync with his blocks. These are looking very healthy. I'd buy one of these any day. A little tip what i found: do not fondle your cultures at all helps them a lot. Do not move cultures around like that. Just inocculate and LET THEM SIT. Maybe check for contamination once every 5 days if possible without touching and you'll see they will be a lot happier. They really don't like to be fondled and shaken too much. Just because it looks healthy doesn't mean you should shake it around and shine bright lights on them like that. The less you move mycelium the happier it is. Just let it go. Don't be a control freak. Once you reach the level of proffessionalism this guy has just stop touching the cultures and you'll be the king of mushrooms. First find out what substrate, temp, humidity your strain likes best. Once you have that down: stop touching them so much and boom.

Thanks for the info. Your videos are straight forward and to the point. I felt like the twenty minutes flew by with the wealth of knowledge being presented. Temping the blocks is something you don't hear from other growers.

Do you still process your fresh sawdust or do you use them straight? :) Thanks for this! Really good video!!

I think how easy it is to grow shiitake comes down to how good the culture is. I used to say shiitake was easy too. I grew them PF Tek, then inoculating spawn bags, then grain spawn to bags. They grew amazingly well, in 5-6 grows I never had a failure. Then I lost my culture to contam. Since that time I have tried dozens of other cultures and NONE have ever been nearly as easy to grow.

I grew shiitake at home years ago. Made my little blocks in coffee cans and submerged them under water in the refrigerator over night when they were ready to fruit. I had some good luck and it was really fun. Would like to grow them again some day. I used pellets broken back down to saw dust and I think bran. My gain spawn was straight popcorn.

I nearly laid myself up drilling and pounding the little dowels into logs and now I find I can do the same thing in bags! No Way!!!

Wonderful video! I love growing them because of all the different stages. I hope you will also do this for the Grifola frondosa.

First of all I just like to reiterate what most everyone else has said "you are the man!" That was an absolutely awesome video a little intense but awesome. I'm in my first go round of ever trying shiitake in blocks. I have shitaki in logs but not grown yet in blocks. Your detailed week by week explanation took some of the worry out of my brain, I know shiitake can take a while and it seems like I wanna speed things up or worry about what I'm seeing but you made it seem perfect. I wish I could drop you a picture because I didn't use fresh wood chips or sawdust & bran. I made a concoction of straw, oak pellets, wood pellets, a little bit of alfalfa pellets, coffee grinds & gypsum. The only question I would have for you is do you have a set PH that you start off with? Do you think that might have something to do with the variations and how the blocks run in the same strain?
