This game is awesome on the steam deck - you can get yourself in a comfortable armchair, wrap yourself in blankets and just sink into it.

For a meatier "boating in a vaguely lovecraftian setting" experience, i recommend Sunless Sea

I am playing this right now. Came out in the humble bundle choice. Again, you are a beast. You are becoming my main goto review center. Not sure how you do it, but you've earned my respect. This is hard work man, takes a long time.

Glad you enjoyed this one! What I really like about it is it’s just so different (from what I usually play at least, but also just in general. It’s unique enough that you can’t just say it’s like “this game” or “this game mixed with that game”). It also just nails that atmosphere and vibe, making it overall a very memorable experience

Also for anyone interested: noclip recently did a documentary on Dredge that was a fun watch!

While I enjoyed this game, I really enjoy upgrades. Dredge let me down a bit by allowing(?) me to fully upgrade myself 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the game. I wish there were more or more impactful, somewhat progression gated upgrades. Pretty good game, especially for the deck/handhelds.

Highly recommend Judero Mort. The game is full of feeling and extreme oddness. A lot of care was put into crafting the handmade world/characters/music I don't even know how I found it, but I'm happy I did.

Dredge was my personal indie GOTY of 2023

I do like a Tetris inventory system. It shows a need for commitment to the things being collected and the respective problems in storing such things. Other "modern" games with a line of text and same size icon don't really capture the whole "can't have it all" principle.

This and Dave the Diver were hits for me on steam deck

Completed it just a few weeks back, it is great. If you like a well oiled gameplay loop and want to lazily collect fish and achievements, certainly worth it.

I really enjoyed my time with this one. Id say it suffers in a way similar to subnautica, an absolutely amazing early and mid game but a massive fall off once you’ve become competent at the mechanics. Once you know there really isn’t any danger, it just becomes a grind. The first 12 hours was a 10/10 though and it’s totally worth your time.

Thanks for info, completed it when it came out and completely missed the DLC :) now bought! Only point on dlc is Iron Rig is basically twice the cost of the Ice one so may well be a case of you get what you pay for :) Loved this game and weirdly for a Lovecraftian game found it quiet zen (while definitely not lacking in atmosphere).

"all the way back in 2023" hahah make it sound like it was 1983. Made me chuckle

Thanks for the detailed review as always. I haven't finished Dredge--as you say, it does slow down in the later hours. However, unlike you, I did find some parts challenging. Or rather, I got into some tight spots and died a few times. Also, there are some areas that annoyed me. Without spoilers, I did get a little frustrated with how some mechanics weren't explained. Exploration games need a lot of mysteries, lovecraftian ones especially, but that's how I felt.

When Mortismal says a game isn't difficult, the way I like to interpret that is "There is a likely possibility that this game may still be quite challenging"

This and Dave the Diver were really my 2023 must haves. Such enjoyable games!

I started playing Dredge on PS5 last week before Halloween. And I really love the game.

This ended up being my favorite game to return to last year. I'm happy it's gotten such recognition.
