I stopped buying clothes and found my personal style.

Today I'm chatting about the clothes I've stopped buying to find and define my personal style. I used to rely on collecting clothing and constantly shopped to stay "on trend", but realized that most of those trends weren't really for me at all. Nowadays I'm embracing a "less is more" philosophy when it comes to my wardrobe, and I've started to really figure out what my style is and what I no longer need to buy for my closet.

What are some pieces of clothing you no longer buy?

I'm honestly your exact opposite! I too consider myself a minimalist (kinda), but in order to really make my wardrobe look like me I realised I NEEDED color, I needed dresses and feminine pieces. For a long time I was in the "well I guess a minimalist wardrobe is just black/white/gray basics" thought pattern and let me tell you, I found it boring. Looks amazing on other people, like you Christina, but it's just not me. I'm glad I learned to trust my taste and realised I can have color and patterns and vintage looking details and still be very minimalist.

Definitely skip the Chanel and go for the 6 month savings. As a slightly older subscriber I’ve learned that it is extremely comforting at best and extremely necessary at worst. Also, I totally get the “fantasy self” wardrobe purchases. I have a few in my closet too!

This was good! I stopped buying stockings, & any clothes that are not cotton, linen, wool and cashmere. I want my clothes to last and not look cheap. Microfibers go into the oceans then people eat the seafood with fibers in it. I also have no need for multiple pairs of jeans. Cotton and linen pants are much more comfortable.

The Chanel! Why have I always thought I will be a true adult woman when I own a tan medium double flap? I think I will feel more secure in myself with an extra $5k in the retirement fund :)

Ha! Mine is pretty much the opposite. I realize how much I love dresses and skirts so I am limiting the pants etc that I buy. I totally agree that the “essentials” list is not necessarily the essentials for you. Also, climate is so important too in that list.

I just realized after several years of following "capsule wardrobe must haves" and "every wardrobe staples" videos that I freaking hate crew neck t-shirts 😄 I've been trying to find the "perfect white tee" for years but turns out it wasn't the tee ñ. They are just not for me. I feel sloppy and shapeless in t-shirts

Not quite where you are yet, but getting there. Not buying low waist jeans or pants, I simply prefer high-waist. And I don‘t buy shorts or short skirts anymore. Just don‘t feel comfortable wearing them and have decluttered all of them.

As a big fan of dresses I must admit that your wedding suit is a bomb and definitely knoks out all the dresses at the party 💖

When my shopping addiction gets the better of me I always feel like I lose my style a bit. Every new piece I get into my wardrobe needs a bit of an adjustment period where I style it with tings I already own. I like my pieces 'tried and tested' before I can say I love them. But I need constant reminders like this because advertisements are getting to me. *I guess what I am saying is: You are the antidote* 😁🖤

It took me a while to understand that somebody else's capsule wardrobe must haves aren't what would work for my wardrobe, and that I would need to figure out what works for me. Tan bag is something that I bought last year influenced by many ladies' suggestions, but it has not worked for me, I have nothing to match it with.

I recently realised I don't actually like knitwear or sweater (except for pure cotton ones). This is so weird, like how is that even possible, not to love a good comfy sweater. Well here we are.

My biggest issue has been the amount of turnover in my wardrobe in recent years - so I don't purchase anything I can't see myself keeping (and using regularly) for at least 5 years. This means choosing items that are high quality, functional, and suit my style. Making this a criterion has really helped me approach purchases with foresight. Even though I'm not always perfect, I've made way better choices.

Me too stopped buying heels, dresses, underwired bras, shirts or jackets with collars, costume jewelry…… we should all do what feels comfortable

WOW...sheer brilliance! I have been feeling some "cognitive dissonance" that is mounting with all of the "essentials." YOUR content in this video has opened my eyes and defined exactly what that nagging feeling is. While I have fantasies of wearing many of the pieces you ticked off, my lifestyle just doesn't call for them. And, the price tag to finance the fantasy is beginning to keep me up at night!!!! So, now that you've defined what I couldn't, I, too, am starting to declutter my wardrobe. I'll sell what I can and donate what I must...and stop the bleeding ($$$$). I have no words, except I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Signed, soon to be free❣

I have quit buying patterns which I used to obsess over. I realized with my hypersensitive overwhelmed exhausted nervous system they were exacerbating or even causing anxiety. I have always worn mainly all black but drool over some delicious color so now have mainly black, tan, cream, white some deep rich red/rusts, teals/mints/sage green, peach/pinks, and a few very simple patterns (stitch lines, dots, small roses) in all earth produced fabrics other than swim/leggings/sun shirts. My anxiety level drops with every patterned item that leaves my house.

I absolutely LOVE seeing the change in your attitude over the years. It really helps give me pause to rethink my shopping habits but in a different way. I’m not a hoarder - I’m an overzealous declutterer and don’t have enough to wear often but your advice and experience still gives me perspective as I shop.

There is nothing wrong with a 'simple' outfit. You'll look timeless and that's also great.
I wanted to get a vintage Chanel bag, but that money. For me it's not an investment...
I don't live in a big city where it's common to have/wear designer items. I'll feel uncomfortable. I have 1 YSL bag and I haven't used it once. How sad is that. It was a dream bag for me, but I regret it a little. The plan is to use it when I travel, but I doubt that I'll do that.

Totally agree that others' essentials don't always work for you! For me, I absolutely can't stand wearing black (I only have 2-3 pieces of black clothing that I can't declutter for professional reasons) and I looove wearing color - however everyone is saying that you NEED to only wear neutrals to have a capsule wardrobe. That is absolutely not true! I have a total of ~70 items of clothing and 10 pairs of shoes for all 4 seasons while still having a fair amount of colorful pieces (and neutrals to pair them with). I also don't own a pair of nude heels just because everyone says you need them. Listening to my intuition when it comes to personal style has left me much happier!

I never wear leggings…it seems most everyone loves leggings to lounge around in. Their go to loungewear staple….I cannot stand the tight fitting feel and to me they are so constricting and uncomfortable. I wear loose, wide leg, lightweight, flowy Capri pants . Each to their own. Knowing what works for me and accepting it really brings me so much freedom in so many ways.
