“What’s your favourite spell Marika?”
“A spell to create a field of flowers.”

Only fromsoft could pull an area with two lootable items and still be one of best areas in the game

When I reached this area, I got so emotional for some reason. Something about seeing the quaint little home of a girl before she became a god is surreal. The grand scope and scale of Elden Ring, all the crazy and dark events, all of it started from a woman in this small village.

The fact that this beautiful flower field is hidden behind Messmer's giant evil murder castle is really funny to me.

This place was where Marika's last trace of "humanity", e.g. love, kindness and compassion remained. This was her final act of kindness, without order.

She abandoned these things when she became a God, which eventually led to her perpetrating the same level of cruelty which she experienced (e.g., the omens, who were mistreated simply because they were born with symptoms of the crucible which she detested)

In a way, it's a tragic foreshadowing of Miquella's fate. Like Marika, he also sought to create a "better", "gentler" age. But he also failed, because he abandoned his love and humanity along the way and got used to bending people to his will.

If there's a lesson that Elden Ring- and perhaps FromSoft as a whole- teaches us, it's to not lose our humanity, especially in the pursuit of power. It makes us go hollow (Dark Souls) and turn into beasts (Bloodborne).

Be kind to one another.

I honestly love the way they reused base game bosses for this area. The dlc can feel so different that at times it’s almost lonely. Seeing those two tree sentinels made me feel weirdly safe, and the immediate followup of those strings and the golden light… it was such a perfect moment.

I think that Shaman Village is the (current) magnum opus of From Softwares style of storytelling.

There is no dialog, no npc, no into to your face explanation, not even a single ghost, just a field of flowers, two items and finally the locations name... ironically written in much smaller letters than any other place, despite of how important it is to everything that happened.

Everything from the start of the DLC was set up... no, the whole game was set up for this moment.

And from my own expierence... I entered this place calm, relaxed and felt cosy even if for just a moment. But the motif of Elden Ring here... does not leave its sad notes, like as if time stopped here, and so it quickly went from calm to uncomfortable and I was confused by it.

Riding around in silence you find the two items, you read them and then (if you read descriptions of items before and learned the lore of everything before) your head starts to slowly but surely connect the dots. You connect the items, the character, the villages name and then... the horrible things you found throughout the DLC.

The Toothed whip, one of the most vile, disgusting weapons in the whole game, its description needs one sentence to say it all.

And instead of confusion, knowledge appears... the connections, the horrible events of past and present, the pain of innocents, the hurt of Marikas children, and then finally her trauma, her own hell called life.

And then comes sadness... horrible sadness, sadness and anger. I had tears in my eyes over "nothing". I was emotionally devastated over "nothing". I almost cried over "nothing". There is nothing there in the game, besides the music and the flowers and empty houses. And it hit me with emotions like a hammer. It felt terrible. Like as if all the horrible things dropped on your head at once. The more you understand the more it hurts.

And the pain of realising that the tragedy of Lands of Shadow and Lands Between was not some giant scheme of outer god, some super villain or vile evil demon entity.

It all calls back to a personal tragedy, lack of empathy, and a goal of Hornsent that was not worth a loss of a single life. From Software did not explain it and there is no meaning to it, because it was so vile and so many lost their lifes for it that no reward would be worth it. No lore explanation would give it excuse. Something that in our history, a lot of people who survived a war like conflict would agree with. It was not worth it. So many lost over nothing. No one deserved a fate like this.

Pain creates more pain. Tragedy births another tragedy. A domino of pain and suffering is falling piece by piece.

And Marika was first of domino pieces to fall. And when she lost everything, there was nothing stopping her. The moment she became a god figure and a mother, her trauma became her childrens trauma and the rest of the world was covered in it from top to bottom.

"In war, whichever side may call itself the victor, there are no winners, but all are losers."

And you get that horrible thought, of how easy it would be to avoid all of it. If only Marika and her village lived as they lived, without worry or knowledge of pain.

Elden Ring is not about outer gods. Its about human tragedy and trauma and how it affects people and family around you. Its a reminder of worst parts of humanity. And a caucionary tale... to not allow any tragedy to consume you from inside out so that it does not hurt closest to you, to always try to seek help if you need it. To understand other people and have empathy no matter their place of birth, no matter the look, no matter the differences.

So much pain would be avoided... if we didn't look for ways to hurt each other.

Just really something to see Marika's village, beautiful and peaceful, but empty. That for all her divinity and the terrible things she did, this must have been what she yearned for. "One day, we'll return together. To our home, bathed in rays of gold."

Miquella cast away his humanity in the land his mother had hers stolen away.

This is the very first thing we ever hear. It's at the beginning of the original 2019 trailer. It's at the beginning of the 2021 Summer Games Fest trailer, it's the first thing we hear when we boot up the game. We hear it during the Elden Beast fight, once Radagon is defeated. And now we know, it's Marika's theme.

My jaw dropped as the realization of what this place was gradually sank it. From this tiny village grew the Elden Ring, The Golden Order, Destined Death, The Fingers, Ranni's conspiracy, all of it.
From this tiny little village, a young girl became a God. It's truly astonishing.

After beating the final boss of the DLC, I had my character lay down here. Might be my favorite fromsoft location ever

Seems like even after ascending to godhood, Marika never forgot her roots if the Tree Sentinels guarding this place are any indication.

the way my brain started piecing things together when i found out that the shamans, who were getting butchered and shoved into jars by hornsent just because they were viewed as lesser, were Marika's people. Suddenly the sheer brutality of Messmer's crusade makes a lot of sense, AND the Order's hatred of Omens, who are likely a divergent form of Hornsent.

What’s amazing about the soundtrack, is that this song is the same one of The Final Battle, and the Main Theme Elden Ring, but stripped of all its notes, no choir, no bass, no strings, no intricate melodies just the basic harp, it sounds young and has multiple breaks between each note, just like Queen Marika; because this was her village, she was a child here, this was her home. She wasn’t a goddess yet, nor a queen, she was just Marika she had to grow, and learn, and develop into something much more complex and intricate.
