Wow, I can't believe this actually worked, a very well implemented workaround! I've done IT for 20 years and couldn't figure this out. To help other people out, I have Gen 2 Chromecast, here is what I did. (Motorola G7, nothing fancy here, no share option as state in video)
1. Turn on your phones wifi and connect to it
2. Follow the instructions in this video when you get to the part where you manually enter your hotspot password.
3. Before hitting connect to your hotspot on the google home app, pull down your app drawer and enable your hotspot
4. Go back to google home app and now connect to the hotspot.
5. Continue to follow the video exactly.
6. If anybody can please confirm this will help to bypass hotel's captive portals let us know.

PS I heard that Chromecast with google tv (the newest generation) can bypass captive portals, i have not confirmed this.

Update: If it won't let you cast to screen from Google Home, all you have to do is turn off the phone's wifi, but leave the hotspot on.

Great video. First step is to re-name your hot spot to something simple and your password to something you will remember. Just press and hold "hotspot" icon. Press on "portable hotspot" press name.(type in new name)
Password (type in new password) then close screen... Auto saves..makes it easier to set up

Hi!! I have an iphone and an ipad, and i am trying to connect my chrome cast via a hotspot... is there any other step to do? It seems that it doesn’t want to connect to the hotspot... i would like to use my network to cast as i do not have wifi.... i tried also with the guest setup, but it doesn’t « see » it... and the pin is not on the tv screen either, but it is activated in google home... i am lost :(

My hotspot is messed up at the moment but I was going to buy a Chromecast today and I read that the guest mode will let you cast after the initial set up with WiFi for 1st time (I have just is very spotty) and then after set up you use the guest mode and your phones regular Internet and it will cast . Is this true?

My problem is that when i activate my hotspot on my phone, the phone’s wifi automatically deactivates. (Oneplus 3). My chromecast actually connects to my phones hotspot, but the phone cant find the chromecast . Any solution to that? Ps. Im reading only rooted phones are able to activate both hotspot and wifi, is yours rooted? EDIT. It worked! After a few tries, and wifi off on my phone, it worked. Thanks!!
