I'm in the Florida panhandle and grew up with it being called fat lighter. There were pine fence posts used to to fence my property years ago and now all of thos posts are fat lighter/wood. I love the idea of drilling a hole into it! Thank you for the tip Jack!

Good tip also I am pleasantly surprised to see you using a good quality lower priced knife like the Mora bushcraft and also looks to be well used 👍. I have both the Garberg and the bushcraft and a few other mora's that are in different kits and are happy with all of them. Super easy to sharpen hold a edge well and are cheap enough I don't worry about them if they were to be lost or stolen. Thanks for a great little tip Jack.

My three-year-old and five-year-old boys really got a kick out this short clip. Made me watch it, over and over. LOL I've been using Fatwood for my wood-burning stove, for years. Peace.

Call it lighter knot in my neck of the woods . The stuff is literally everywhere here if you know what to look for . I usually grab some every time I’m in the woods so I have a pretty good stockpile .

We in the deep south call it "rich pine" but it definitely works! My husband and I keep it around the house year round.

Great video, Rich. Thank you! (Watching you shave the wood and cord reminds me of Why I like serrated edges... Just makes it so much easier, And saves the edge of my blade.)✌️

Fat wood is amazing. Some random fellow campers gave me some probably 15 years ago. Still have a bit of it and still works great. Not at potent smelling after all the years

I used to have a huge pile of fat lighter. One Christmas I had a drunk family memeber throw all of it into the fire pit thinking it was regular wood.

Okay, now I get it. You can use anything you want to start your fire. Cesdrus Libani (Mediterranean pine) is quite tough to scrape and use alone. I have some eco rope in my pack, hemp perhaps, which is a good start.

That's funny, I l learned this when I was 10 or younger. I forget people that grew up in the city were never taught these simple tricks. Jack should do a video on starting a fire in deep snow.

Instead of using your knife to strike a spark, which will eventually wear into your knife, carry a short piece of a file, to use as a striker. I had a revolutionary period re-enactor show me this trick years ago. Files are very hard, and good at striking a spark.
