Chances are, you will end up at the bar where after two or three drinks you will be presented with a bill - anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. Has anyone out there every fallen foe that? Friendly person “please buy me a drink”?

Just got back from a 3 day trip to Istanbul. Pretty much every shopkeeper, taxi driver and restaurant is either trying to scam or rip you off. Was annoying not able to enjoy vacation as having to constantly haggle and be on the look out for scams. Beautiful country with rich history but not worth visiting as cannot really enjoy

As a Turk, I feel totally ashamed that these scams (and many of them not even Turkish, they just speak Turkish) are doing that. Turkish police MUST act harder on these scams.

If a random man approached me asking if I wanted to go drinking I’d be thinking he wanted to bum me

On my first night in Istanbul I checked what to watch out for, luckily I found a warning on the internet about scams with overpriced drinks and nightclubs. The next day, my taxi driver tried to trick me. At every step they try to deceive you or sell you something too expensive, it is definitely not a city I will visit again.

I can really understand how reliable and hard-working café or restaurant owners in Istanbul feel about this. The scammers really ruin it for the good name and local economy.
I knew about this scam and I do think twice before visiting a bar or restaurant in Istanbul.
And what about all those hospitality properties that could be used for anyone who wants to start something but with good and sincere intentions.

Honestly I think I'd rather just get beat up then spend $2000

This is quite sad to watch, but I would never trust a stranger approaching me on the street being overfriendly. Also this video was filmed around 2010.

Been to Turkey many times never been scammed because I don't go to dodgy places. Never sit down in a restaurant without a menu with prices ask how much the beer is. Taxi can be book fare up front use apps for cabs hotels flights coach and never go every where unless in a tour group.
Rent a car get quotes the scam when filling up is someone will put in half a tank instead of full .

I was at the Angora Hotel Side. The bar is open and anyone can enter from the pavement. A lovely local guy linked up with holiday makers offering drinks he said we're on him. People wanted to photograph this warm new and generous friend. He would not be photographed though! One girl, unbeknownst to him got a picture on her phone. This new friend left and then the holiday makers were presented with his huge bill. They refused. The barmen called the police. They described an olive skinned dark haired man kind of everyone of Turkish descent! The police wanted the guests to pay. The barmens face dropped a mile when the photo of the con man was produced! The evidence scuppered both police and staff's plans!

Thank you for this. We just booked a trip to turkey but after this video we shifted it to Sweden. Sorry Turkey you lost our tourist money for police allowing this to occur.

How they get away with that is horrendous. I think the moral here is don’t talk to any strangers

As a Turk this is disappointing especially since the police did nothing. If they are scamming someone out US$1400 that is a lot of money in Turkiye.

how horrendous that even the police are in on it without shame

Loved your video! I hate scamming, whether it be online, tourist or other.

It was really interesting to watch these players actually run their con! Learned a lot in your comments as well! Thank you and be careful out there! 💕
