Shoe Brush Drop Scam in Istanbul

The scammer drops his shoe brush and you tell him about it. He is "grateful" and offers to shine your shoes. You think it is a kindness but it is not. He gives you a sob story and wants a big tip. Be careful when you travel.

Haha I fell for this in Istanbul. I was at least lucky enough to not get robbed while being distracted with a shoe shine.

A friend of mine told me about how he got fell by this scheme. Dude has been living in istanbul for more than a decade. 🤣

A rather harmless scam tbh.
You can always just reject to pay even if you let them shine your shoes.
It might be a bit annoy to deal with, but that's usually it.

You could alway polish your own shoes before you leave or throw the brush into Bosporous river

My wife and I were walking along the road in Istanbul, when I spotted that the man passing us had dropped his brush. I quickly pointed at it and began to alert him when my wife, who was fully away of these scams, assertively said ‘NO’ and pushed my arm to keep walking without falter. In doing so, she spilt my coffee which very nearly hit my expensive shoes. Wasn’t best pleased. I just wonder which would’ve cost more, the scam rate or the damaged shoes
