How closed terrariums work and the science behind them.

A closed terrarium is a self-sufficient ecosystem that is created inside a clear enclosed container replicating a piece of nature. It is built with substrate, natural materials and moisture loving plants. It is essentially a miniature ecosystem that is able to effectively sustain itself with almost no interference from outside.

But have you ever wondered how a terrarium actually works? How is it able to sustain life inside an enclosed space without having access to the outside atmosphere?

I have tried to explain the science behind closed terrariums in this video in the most simple way that is easy to understand. Hope you all like it.

Hey ! I just want to tell you you give me the love of terrarium. I'm french, and the terrariums solded in shops of my country are so ugly and "synthetic". You give me an other face of the art of terrarium : imitate the chaos of the nature and creating a true ecosystem. You're my biggest source of inspiration, and i love your zen attitude :)

Thanks for this. I just built a 50 gallon terrarium for an eastern ringneck snake and based on this everything seems to be working correctly. My main concern is the breakdown of dead matter and the cleanup of mold and harmful bacteria. Its entirely native and should replicate the snakes natural habitat. I also raised an aquarium full of treefrog tadpoles to add as a food source for the snake which ill add as they develop into frogs. The frogs should also be able to eat the springtails and isopods as they grow. I still need something to eat the snails because they are breeding out of control.
