The oldest terrarium and the oldest self-sustaining ecosystem experiment #shorts #terrarium

Delve into the fascinating tale of David Latimer's groundbreaking experiment that began in 1960. Join us as we explore how Latimer planted a spiderwort seedling in a large glass bottle, sealing it tightly after adding water. Witness the astonishing journey of this plant, which remained undisturbed until 1972 when Latimer opened it only to add more water. Over time, what started as a simple plant trapped in a glass bottle evolved into a self-sustaining ecosystem. Learn how plants produced oxygen through photosynthesis, while bacteria decomposed dead plants to produce carbon dioxide, creating a delicate balance within this closed environment

The masculine urge to make your own enclosed self-sustaining ecosystem just to have it

I’m old and in the late 60s and early 70s me and my older sister made many terrariums. One of my sisters was still hanging in there when she left home got married etc. it was many years old but met its demise in a tornado in north Texas. They were so popular, thanks for sharing this upload! It brought back some cool memories!🌼

The dude who put the plants in the bottle is straight right. The plants grow over the years and it created a huge discovery.

Now, just make the cork much tighter, and send about 20 of these to mars so we can technically say we have life on mars

I was trying to find a science experiment that proved that plants generate carbon dioxide(air), by placing a green plant in a glass "bell"(a dome shaped jar which closes air tight when placed over something. A mouse was placed in the bell with the plant, and lived normally without any air except for that which the plant produced.

To think this is such a simple feat of human ingenuity but yet we constantly damage our own world while this man created an entire world in a glass jar that does better than what we have done in the last 20 years alone!! I do my best to spread extra seeds around my garden when possible or even around the tree line to help the bees with pollen production

Fun fact: if it lives for over 100 years if it were opened would become immunocompromised due to the adaptation of the bacteria outside its enclosures rather then inside which would be too different to what it’s used to and probably die
