edit (9/3/2022) why did i write this


my thought of the story (my language skill is bad so please understand)
i think the story of this song is about someone who can't express their thoughts and forced to agree to anything that is stated by someone who might be stronger than them (like a leader). and the narrator was treated like anything the leader want to be and must do anything the leader want, but then something happened to the narrator's family that was caused by the leader, but the leader denied about it when people asked about it, the leader even fake a story of it. the narrator who knew about it was angry and now was sick of the leader and do bad things, but the narrator also can't do harm to the leader because they might be related. so in order to gain revenge, the narrator tried to 'backstab' the leader by destroying all the thing the leader have worked hard on, but without the leader knowledge. the leader also had the same reaction like the narrator's when they know that their family is dead. in the end, the two of them was the same after all, they are just waiting time to be their turn to crush one another, even when they know it was bad they still can't stop doing it, and the two of them are know just someone that can't think of anything else than hating each other, even to the point they forgot how to act other than just to hate each other.

After all this time it finally hit me why "we worship a moon that stole its light from the sun" feels like an especially powerful line. The song is full of suggestions that its about an ex-cultist, and most real world cults exist to steal from their followers. The unconscious irony of a cult that exists to let its leaders be successful through the efforts of others hinting at its own nature by worshipping something that only shines because of the 'efforts' of something else is a truly poetic metaphor that sets the tone and subject of the entire song in the space of a single sentence.
