Should You Buy a High Mileage Car?

Should you buy a high mileage car? The myth behind not buying high mileage cars goes back to the 1970's and 1980's when everyone was told not to waste your money on a high mileage car because it will break down.
But todays cars are built to last, a modern diesel car will do in excess of 400,000 miles and a petrol car will do in excess of 150,000 miles if serviced at regally intervals.
So you need to decide should I buy an old car with high mileage or a younger car with high mileage or even an old car with low mileage. There are other things to think about, such as shock absorbers, bushes, exhaust etc. the older the car the more small things might need to be replaced over time(ware and tare).

I have a 2008 Honda jazz and it’s the best car I’ve ever had mines got 110, 000 on the clock and it still drive like it’s brand new and it has never ever let me down the only thing I’ve had to replace on it was the catalytic converter when it got stolen. I’m on the Honda jazz fan club on Facebook and one person on there has a 52 plate jazz with 450, 000 miles on the clock like you said as long as you service them regularly it will last for ever! I’m only ever having jazz’s now even though I’m 20 and I get called a grandad owning one it’s just such an easy to use car that I know will always start when I need it 😁

High mileage cars are ok as long they have a good amount of service history, my first car only had 30k miles on it and i left it 3 years later on 70k miles, but it came with no service history so i did the main ones, spark plugs, engine oil and oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, and the car ran fine for 3 years, i now bought a higher mileage motor 80k miles but has full service history, one thing to look out for on these higher mileage motors is has the timing chain or timing belt been replaced as this will need replacing at higher mileage to prevent any damage from occurring to the engine in the situation if one of these components fail. My car had its timing chain and all related parts replaced recently which was a peace of mind for me, so all i going to worry about now is engine oil, oil filter, air filter, and gearbox oil change as this hasn't been done, most manufacturers have a timeline of when to get things done such as service intervals, what i recommend is cut these in half as on BMW most the engine problems would be prevented if oil changes were done early. Thats my two cents and thank you travis for this amazing video

Just brought a 2005 Civic 1.6 Executive with full history sitting on 147k miles. I got it cheap as it had the typical input shaft bearing fault on the gearbox. £700 for a gearbox rebuild and £230 for a full once over with all service items changed. Interior is mint everything works including the air con and both heated seats. Drives like a car with half its mileage on it. With the price of used cars at the minute it made sense to buy it cheap and fix the faults.

Well, I recently made the biggest mistake with this sort of thing. Passed my test 6 months ago (Big thanks to Travis for his driving tips) and on the 1st of December 2021 I fell in love with a BMW 330i, yep a 3.0 litre straight 6, 20 year old car with 135k on the clock. lets just say it's had some problems and now it is sitting on the driveway and i cant afford to fix it. So now i have worked so hard to get my licence in the mist of a pandemic and now i dont have a car to drive. Wont be making that mistake again....i hope.

My advice is to buy on condition and history.

The trouble I have with high mileage cars are Euro cars develop mystery electrical issues and engine lights come on, Japanese cars have CVT time bombs, and both of these can cost 6-8k to rectify. Being out of warranty is asking for trouble unless its a simple car.

Depends on what kind of miles. If the car hasn't been heavily used it's ok

Wow, I had no idea hondas lasted so long! My volkswagen golf started having problems at 50, 000 miles and 4 years old so it seems I need to swap to a more reliable brand 😂.
