Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO) Signs & Symptoms, & Why They Occur

Small bowel obstructions (SBO) are mechanical blockages or occlusions of the small intestine. They can occur due to the small intestine twisting or “kinking” due to an intra-abdominal adhesion. When an SBO occurs, they cause gastrointestinal contents to “back-up” prior to the blockage, leading to a host of signs and symptoms, which we discuss in this lesson.

Once after I ate a hamburger I felt some thing sharp when, I swallowed my food then 3 hrs later I felt sick my stomach was bothering me so I went to the hospital they said I was ok the next day when I got up 3 am to urinate my stomach was a size of small ball . I imidiately drove to the hospital then emergency surgery was made the next morning the doctor found a tooth pick that perforated my intestine n he said I was very lucky that I came on time and, if I was late an hour I would have died due to sepsis and thank god that god woke me up to urinate while I was sleep n imagine if I didn’t wake up, I would have been gone n I live by my self, I thank god daily even though I’m not good Muslim but I have always fed the poor

Your video was right on point and your explanation was easy to comprehend. I myself just had surgery for a small bowel obstruction and had most of the symptoms you mentioned in your video. I thank God I decided to go to the hospital emergency when I did otherwise the outcome could have been worst. I always had a pain under my right rib that turned into a crampy pain in the belly button area. This is a serious condition and it’s not to be taken lightly. I had lots of adhesions in my small intestine which was totally closed of. A contrast MRI revealed my condition. Thanks for a great video.

I’ve been diagnosed with a obstruction and told that I need to go on a liquid diet. I’ve got all these symptoms apart from vomiting. Not looking forward to it. Hopefully this helps.

I know everyone is different, but if someone has a complete blockage and does not seek treatment, how long can they survive with it? My mom has end stage colorectal cancer, and a rectal tumor which was causing a partial blockage. She is on hospice now and all signs point to a complete blockage (started with loud rumbles, now no passing gas and no bowel movement for almost a week, extreme bloating which is growing, extreme pain and spasming/contracting that is visible). I hate that she is suffering. She has of course turned down any scans or offer to go to the ER to get it checked or resolved since this was something she knew could happen. She's on strong pain meds and the nurse is now bringing Bentyl to see if that will help bring comfort. I just really want to know realistically how long she is going to have to suffer with this.

Do you have a video about the type of symptoms where you should seek medical attention immediately? Would these symptoms be an example? Thank you.

I take opioid medication and have for many years. In 2014, I became very constipated and had to go to the hospital, the doctor jabbed a vile of medication into my upper abdomen and I went to the bathroom twenty minutes later. Idk what she gave me but it worked. Years later I discovered that if I eat several servings of watermelon and corn everyday, I don't have issues with constipation. Also, I discovered something called Coloslim.... I think that's the name of it and if I feel I'm getting constipated, I'll take one of those and I'll go to the bathroom but I prefer to eat watermelon and corn. Everything is so expensive these days that I haven't been able to have watermelon daily but that really helped me tremendously.
Good luck to everyone out there. Bowel health is very important.

My husband had an SBO 4 weeks ago with pain, tummy distention, and vomiting. Went to the hospital and had a CT scan with contrast, and they found a neuroendocrine mass in the mesentrey. (Which is a hormonal cancer that can appear anywhere in your body but is very slow growing). They operated, took out the mass and his appendix, and joined his small bowel together after a large resection. The pathology report came back as cancer. He is now on yearly CT Scan checks but fortunately did not need any chemotherapy.

I remember one day waking up and my stomach felt like a ballon that I couldn’t suck in. So I gave it a week and continued to feel bloated and stopped eating so than it made me feel very weak and I started having bloody stool. I really thought something was wrong with my pancreas because that’s the area it was hurting. I went to the hospital and they did a ct scan and dr just said that no tumors but there was a lot of stool so I took all the laxatives she recommended and NONE have worked if anything they made me feel weak. I went to a different hospital and he said he wasn’t doing another ct scan and to eat a lot of fiber so I loaded up the cooked broccoli and beans BAD IDEA. I started feeling very bloated and sick and the stool softeners made me feel very weak. He prescribed a saline enema(fleet) and it hurt my rectum to do and the next day I had alot of heart pain. I was also drinking lots of prune juice to try and “clean” my intestines and lots of bloody stool. It’s been like 3 weeks and I feel so helpless.. I now have heart pain and difficulty breathing. I will probably go to the hospital again but I really don’t want more ct scan but it’s probably something I’ll have to do. I’ve never had constipation problems in the past and I’m sad that I’m 20 and Im having these problems:(
