Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO) | Risk Factors, Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Small bowel obstructions (SBO) are mechanical blockages or occlusions of the small intestine. They can occur due to the small intestine twisting or “kinking” due to an intra-abdominal adhesion. In this lesson, we discuss the risk factors, the various causes of SBO, signs and symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated.

Thank you for this video! I’m 3 weeks post operative from a closed-loop SBO. My surgeon said it was so bad I wouldn’t have made it another day. Listen to your body!!! I never had the causes or risk factors of a SBO, but there is a very rare (1-3%) cause of congenital bands, which are tissues that your born with that twist the intestines. Never went to the hospital in 27 years until last month.

My husband went in to hospital as an emergency. Distended stomach, pain, vomiting. CT Scan performed with contrast. Diagnosis was neuroendochrine tumour in the mesentrey tagging pulling on the small bowel. Had over 2 feet of small bowel dissected. Plus a few small tumours on the bowel.

The surgeons saved his life.

1 day my mom, girlfriend & i were cleaning, plus we had a house full of ants, we spray bleach everywhere. I ingested something, probably bleach on food, was in the most PAIN ever had in my LIFE, 4 hours later, my small Bowel Twisted. I had a EMERGENCY OPERATION 2HOURS LATER 😮. Surgeon Cut 2ft of small intestine. I was so healthy before then, ate fruit vegetables, even jogged. Now I can't do as Much, it changed my Life. I digested food too quick now. If I drink coffee or eat sweetes like Donuts 🍩 or 🍰 cake, Im in the bathroom in 5 minutes. Are any of these new complications happening to any of you guys? How do you handle it? And how can we reverse it or make it better?

I’m goin to the Doctors this week, because I really feel like I have Partial intra abdominal adhesion. I got the gastric sleeve surgery 2yrs ago, now for the past 2 months I’ve been severely constipated, can’t move my bowels on my own without an enema or colonics hydrotherapy, or drinking Detox tea, today all of a sudden my stomach feels really gassy and I at least been passing gas today, I haven’t in several weeks, and the bloating is ridiculous.

@JJMedicine I recently had to take diarrhoea medication, a very small amount. I typically don't because I experience obstruction immediately. I have had surgery before (my colon had twisted around itself because it was too long). I've been drinking warm water and increased my fibre intake, but nothing is helping. What cost effective measures would you recommend?

Good information. Bowel obstruction is a seriously complicated condition. If you have the same problem you can consult with Dr Vikram Chauhan. He is a good doctor.

Great explanation! Just had surgery on small intestine three weeks ago and Im still weak... trying to get stronger. Bowels better though. Worse pain ever in the beginning and after surgery. Wondering if anyone out there had this surgery and how long it took to get strong again?
