As Western powers continue to warn that Russia is about to launch an all-out invasion of Ukraine,... shelling by separatists in the eastern part of the country has reportedly killed two Ukrainian soldiers.
The president of Ukraine has proposed a meeting with Vladimir Putin to avert conflict,... and the international community is also calling on Russia to de-escalate.
Kim Sung-min reports.
As shelling and heavy bombardment intensifies in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine,... the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic on Saturday called on able-bodied men to sign up with local militias.
This comes as the Ukrainian military announced earlier that two soldiers were killed and four wounded in shelling by pro-Russian separatists in the region.
The Ukrainian military said separatists had violated the ceasefire more than 70 times in the previous 24 hours.
With tensions escalating, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to seek a resolution to the crisis.
Ukraine's leader also appealed to western powers to drop the policy of "appeasement" towards Moscow, saying what is needed now is a policy that ensures "security and peace."
His remarks come as the U.S. and its allies continue to monitor the evolving situation in Ukraine,... calling on Russia to reduce its military activity near Ukraine's borders.
According to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki,... President Joe Biden will convene a National Security Council meeting to discuss Ukraine on Sunday.
She added that the national security team has reaffirmed that Russia could launch an attack against Ukraine at any time.
Foreign ministers from the G7 nations also released a joint statement on Saturday urging Russia to de-escalate tensions and withdraw its forces, saying that there have been no signs of reduced Russian activity near Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the World Bank on Saturday said it is preparing a 3-hundred-50 million dollar disbursement to Ukraine for consideration by the group's board by the end of March as part of a plan for short and long-term financing for the country.
Meeting with the Ukrainian leader,... World Bank President David Malpass said... the group will continue to support the Ukrainian people and economy.
