In 1959, Remy Van Lierde served as a Colonel in the Belgian Air Force at the Kamina airbase in Belgian occupied Congo. In Katanga region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, returning from a mission by helicopter, he reported having seen an enormous snake as he flew over the forests.

As a snake, I can confirm that Colonel was well respected

I can actually say that I went to the Congo in February of 1987 as part of a 5 man expedition into the heart of a 5, 500 square mile unexplored swamp in Northern Congo looking for extremely large reptiles. Snakes like this one included. I have posted a CNN interview with me about that expedition on my YouTube channel. I had another expedition organized in 1996 specifically to go and capture one of the giant snakes but my financing fell through. 73 and beat up now I’m too old for such adventure. Great memories of a great adventure though.

The report also claimed that snake emerged from a tunnel. It’s fascinating to think about how large the underground rivers systems of the Congo are. Sounds like perfect place for a giant to live and thrive.

What makes this believable is the fact that the Congo Jungle is a perfect place for a big snake and I highly doubt the well respected General new that. But I also wouldn’t doubt the Jungle respects him, nonetheless.

The fact that the photo was verified as real is wild. It’s so clear and undeniable.

This is going to sound crazy but what if the colonel was only a little bit respected?

The locals of the Congo have always spoken of snakes almost 100ft long as well as the J’ba Fofi. Spiders that look like tarantulas but measured over 5ft in width. And when you think that over half the Congo is still unexplored, (that is the size of France) you have to wonder what the heck is in that rain forest?

Ahh the well respected colonel is back again

After watching this video I’ve come to the conclusion that the craziest thing about this 100 ft snake existing in the 20th century, so long after the Titanoboa existed, in the jungle of the Congo, is that the Colonel was well respected

I actually remember this from Arthur C Clarke's Mysterious World: Episode Dragons, Dinosaurs and Giant Snakes. The photo was analyzed then and the snake was estimated to be at least 40 feet. The Colonel is also interviewed on the episode.

Listening to the gentleman pilot's interview, I would go with his estimate of 50 feet long, head 2 feet wide and 3 feet long. This would probably put it in the league of the snake Titanaboa. The gentleman DID NOT say a minimum of 50 feet....he said 50 feet. No where near 195 feet.

I honestly believe it to be a massively oversized rock python that feasted in the Congo rainforest and became enormous

It’s a small surviving species of titanaboa. The snake did used to exist and all the reports say it’s the exact same size. When you look at the picture it’s totally believable that this is a titanoboa.

I would love for it to be the real deal and maybe it is, but the problem with this picture is there's nothing to use for scale in the photo so you can't rule out that this might be a close up photo of a much smaller snake or even a very close up picture of a worm and those are small patches of grass and plant material instead of bushes and trees. Not saying that's the case but if you got some 1950s camera equipment and took a slightly blurred photo from above I'm betting you could make it look very similar. Someone should experiment with that

There is no sense of scale. That vegetation could be trees, which would make the snake 100 ft long. Or it could be tufts of grass, which would make the snake 1 ft long.
