When Betelgeuse Goes Supernova

What it would be like if Betelgeuse, that giant red star we can actually see in the night sky, suddenly blew up in a supernova? This video gives you a sneak peek! It shows how Betelgeuse would become crazy bright, like shining as bright as the Moon, even during the daytime! And get this, over time, the remains of the exploded star would turn into this amazing, expanding cloud of gas and dust in space - a nebula!

Just a heads up - the video shows the nebula getting bigger in the sky over time, which is how it would look to us as it expands. But don't worry, Betelgeuse and the nebula are still super far away, about 700 light-years distant, so we're totally safe here on Earth!

The craziest thing is that the star is around 500 light years away, which makes all the light we see 500 years old, that means would make the light we see older than Isaac Newton

Imagine looking up at the night sky and seeing a second ‘moon’ for weeks. Beautiful

The video is over exaggerating the supernova, but if it did supernova, it would be very bright and would be visible during the day time

imagine just doing some star-gazing. your mum comes up and starts asking you which star / planet is which. then she points at betelgeuse’s supernova and asks “is that a nebula?”

If you realize, that Betelgeuse appears like the smallest possible virus on our night sky, but the light from it can be visible easily even from cities and if it exploded you could see it easily during the day

This is the most unrealistic it can get. No, we aren't seeing a huge ass nebula. Only a bright "star" in the sky

Funny enough it couldve already happened the light just hasnt traveled to us yet.

Looks very pretty, but are we sure this isn't gonna be an IRL Eye of Terror?

That's not how big it is guys chill

It would take 700 years to take light to come here.

who knows, maybe it did go supernova but we haven’t seen it yet cause it is 709 light years away?

It will look pretty scary at first, but then it will look beautiful. But, don't worry. The supernova will not impact planet earth.

The thing about light years is that light takes one year to travel that distance, hence the name. So if the distance is 643 light years, it will take 643 years for the light from the supernova to reach us; if the distance is 724 light years, it will take 724 years for the light to reach us so basically we would already be dead before it reaches us

I thought Betelgeuse is Beetlejuice... The super nova is cool!

Luckily, for a supernova to do any harm to a planet, it must ocurr at a distance equal to or less than 50 light years.
This will be a cool lightshow, but nothing bad will happen to our planet. (the irl supernova won't actually be that big, it will look like an ultra bright star, visible even during the day)

Betelgeuse, a red supergiant, is expected to go supernova sometime within the next 100, 000 years, though it could happen much sooner, potentially within the next few decades, and the exact timing is uncertain.

When Betelgeuse went supernova, the Crab Nebula created

This is why I’m scared of Betelgeuse, there is rumors that it will explode causing a supernova
