Interesting I liked the s5 image better far as color balance, the image seemed more dynamic.

Great video, this is exactly what I had concluded. Outside of my personal frustrations with the crop in 60p I think the S5II is better value camera. I have recently been in a huge debate with someone about this very topic, they just could not grasp that although the FX3 is a better camera, the difference isn't as big as the investment in lenses and lighting that could be made by using the left over budget.

Just FYI, since Sigma is part of the L mount alliance, their lenses are not considered 3rd party in the eyes of Panasonic, and are fully supported by them.

Really interesting video. I personally think the S5 ii looks like a great deal. The fx3 is a brilliant camera, but it comes at quite a price.

Lumix is my go to. I use it more than my Komodo

Lumix is so much better, Sony way overrated, great cameras and color though no lie.

Sony is great, as much as Lumix but the sad reality is that there is more lenses to rent for the E-Mount rather than L-Mount :( I work on both systems but deep inside I'm Lumix and Blackmagic fanboy 😅

a more interesting proposition when it comes to value is that you can pick up an s1h for even a little cheaper than an s5iix at this point and it's still a hell of a camera, particularly if you don't need autofocus and do more creative projects. There's something special about the s1h image

I think one of the value of open gate is capturing a moment that you want to post horizontally and vertically. Have it in my xh2s and i love it for yt videos and ig fb and tiktok reels :)

Comparing these cameras with the experience in practice is very useful for me, it's just another level, I'm still in the waiting mode for buying Lumix cameras, your review has dispelled all doubts about this, thank you

Great comparison! I'd just like to add one thing regarding the h.265 topic: Yes, the h.265 files straight out of the S5II can be really challenging on an older machine BUT the option to record internal proxies (since the firmware 3.0 update) is such a great feature as they're small, easy to edit and already there when you get back from shooting. So if you're using internal proxy recording, even the h.265 files aren't a big deal anymore - and it also can speed up your edits, if you created the proxies for editing yourself before.

Why did you not make comparison with S5iiX instead of S5ii?
S5iiX is surely more video?

Great overview Gary, how on earth are you so productive 😉👍
The S5ii is amazing value for sure. For me the difference open gate 3:2 makes is for anamorphic. You get a completely different image and field of view out of a 1.5x -1.6x anamorphic on open gate than on 16:9. You also get 4:3 with the S5ii for 1.8x, while Sony seems to reserve these resolutions for top of the range only.

I own a Panasonic S5IIx and I'm deeply satisfied by the image quality. I shoot in 4K ProRes HQ using the external SSD. My only issue is the L-Mount lenses which are harder to find and resell because most people have Sony E-Mount lenses with their camera.

about your comparaison in image quality, i have seen a reviewer that picked up on your issue, the Vlog footage is often overexposed if you try to match the 2 cameras using the same colors grading. when that reviewer used the sony as a base the lumix footage was overexposed, when using the lumix as a base the sony footage was underexposed

My two cents. I own a S5IIX and a Red Komodo. Yes, the Red has better color but the Lumix has everything else. I use Zeiss Milvus Primes on my Red and just picked up an EF to L adapter to do some serious comparisons. My hope is to pick up some S Pro glass to use as B-cam with the Red. The S5IIX is not mentioned in this video but it's worth noting you can shoot full frame 6k ProRes HQ on to SSD and I also have the BM Monitor which gives me 6k BRAW.

I used to own an A7SIII. I never really liked the Sony color. (I could talk about the fight between BM and Apple about ProRes RAW, but I won't.) The Burano is very interesting, but I think I'm going to wait and see if Panasonic releases a new autofocus Varicam. Not sure how long I'm willing to wait.

On a completely separate note, if Nikon (after purchasing Red) starts creating full frame mirrorless with internal R3D I may be buying Nikons in the future. I know they have N-Raw but haven't done much investigation. I personally think Nikon is going to go the Sony route with high end cinema, and pro mirrorless.

I've been with Sony since the old PD-150 days. I love the tiered levels of cameras with the lenses fitting them all. The image on the FX3 does not disappoint.. although WE NEED OPEN GATE! Panasonic has the value lock on that for sure!

Thank you for taking us behind the scenes of your actual work. Fair points on both cameras. Keep up the good work. 👍

Great video! For anyone choosing between these two cameras, you talk about all the important things, really!

All cameras are really great now. Even cameras that are 5 years old. Sony has the best autofocus. But I think all brands are otherwise even. I believe if you can be happy and productive with what ever system you have you’re personally ahead of the game no matter what happens.
