You Can Hear The Difference Between Hot and Cold Water

Hot and cold water sound different when you pour them. When Steve pitched this to me, I didn't believe it, and then he sent me a couple of sound files, at which point I knew this was going to be the first of the guest videos!

"I wonder why Steve didn't go into more detail about the fluid dynamics..." [searches online] "...wow, fluid dynamics are complicated."

I love the fact that when I heard the cold water I just thought "this sounds like anything else being poured, there is no way I'll be able to tell the difference", and yet when I heard the hot water I had suddenly a vivid image of a cup of tea being made and I immediately knew.

so rather than being "something you might not have known", it's "something you might not have known you know"

I am glad he did not spill any on his hand as we would have heard the difference then

I've always thought this! When I run the tap to have a wash I can hear when the water is ready and warm. I asked my physics teacher about it once and he thought I was crazy..

I remember at Uni, a friend of a friend was showing us his student film project. Part of it was a repeated stylistic device f cutting to a montage of tea being made. We all had the feedback that something about the shot felt wrong, it sounded like cartoon tea or something. I'm wondering now if he'd used the sound effect of cold water and we were unconsciously detecting the flaw.

That is a great example of an unknown known.
You know the answer, you have not asked the question.

This solved one of my biggest mystery of life I've been wondering my whole life! I'm not joking at all! You also explained it very well with the example of hot and cold honey. Thank you so much Steve!

I've always heard this difference but assumed it had to do with hot water catching steam pockets during the pour. water is an interesting fluid, to say the least
