Elizabeth the first was a rainbow of characteristics she was cunning, she was
vain she was kind she was very smart and is one of the most successful celebrated queens in British history.
She ruled for 45 years from 1558 to 1603 following the death of her older half-sister, Mary I. While her rule is well known for ushering in a golden age and generally considered one of the most glorious in English history ,Elizabeth herself is also known for her distinctive makeup.
Her makeup gave her an iconic look, but it also may have been the thing that killed her.
As she tried creating her iconic look she might have just caused her own death.
Today we look at what may have caused the death of queen Elizabeth the first.

It's honestly a miracle she still somehow managed to live this long.

She washed off her lead mercury make up with more mercury 🤯 dear lord what a mess. This gives me some second hand anxiety and depression for her. Yikes

There were many brands of ceruse, but the Italian one was most popular, and it was the one that contained the greatest amount of lead. What couldn't have escaped people's notice (and didn't) was that the workers who made the ceruse often fell horribly sick and even died.

When Elizabeth Tudor contracted smallpox, her friend Mary Sidney cared for her. Mary, the apothecaries and courtiers bundled her in red felt to prevent the disease spreading and stop radical scarring. I never knew that until I mentioned it to my grandmother when I was about 17. She used red felt in times of smallpox too.

If Pennywise had a sister she'd probably look a lot like that!

“She had half an inch of lipstick on her lips when she died/she also had a full list of makeup on her face.” I am fairly sure that isn’t possible….I defy anyone to put on a half inch of lip stick now, with lipsticks made with all the chemical processes today that help it adhere better, last longer, etc…as opposed to crushed red stuff in a goose fat base. And same with the other makeup being an inch on her face…was she looking at the world through 1 inch make-up tubes around her eyes? I suspect she wore heavy makeup that caused health problems, but she lived a very decent length by the standards of the time and many others copied this makeup style.

Glenda Jackson's Elizabeth always looks the most accurate from descriptions at the time.

The pronunciation of the word lead is mispronounced many times. Some saying it with a long e like reed, a short i like lid and then other times it’s right with a short e like lead. Other than that it’s a good video

omg thank god I wasn't born in this time period!!! Rather than prioritize mental health, appearance was EVERYTHING!! I don't even wear makeup, but I didn't think that mercury and lead would cause way worse! Thanks for sharing this!!!

Fun fact: Aristocratic women wore white paint on their faces to let commoners know that they don't work for a living hence not getting suntanned in the fields etc

I can’t imagine how miserable she was trying to keep up her image while suffering from smallpox scars and the effects of the lead :/ glad we have better skin products nowadays!

Surprised she liked lived and reigned so long? If she didn't use all this poison, we may have been mourning the death of Elizabeth I not 2 last month???
