2024 BMW 5 Series G60 (520d xDrive) review - Bigger AND Better?

The G60 5 Series is about the same size as a short-wheelbase 7 Series from a decade ago and you certainly notice it has grown up. It is about 10 centimeters longer than the G30 it replaces, it has more room for passengers, but it also has a smaller trunk, and it's not quite as agile around the bends. Its bigger body also means it's lugging around about 100 kg of extra weight over its predecessor, and between this, the longer wheelbase, and the very light steering, this feels much more limo-like to drive than any previous 5 Series.

I love my new 2024 BMW 540i X Drive for looks and handling, but the new electronics are daunting. I'm on my 7th. 5 Series, and have never had to call a BMW Genius soooo much. They correct one thing, and that causes other issues. I used to have to simply press a button to reset the trip meter, but now I have to literally talk to the computer. So stupid. I don't really need the hand signal radio controls, but when we are simply talking and using some hand gestures (as everyone does), the radio channel can change. Making phone calls is also difficult, and when I give up and try to make the call using my cell phone, there is also a problem because the phone and car are now connected. AND NO SPARE TIRE???? I didn't mind the Run-Flat tires, but now all that they give us is a small air pump and their fancy version of Fix-A-Flat. I asked my salesman what happens if I have a big puncture or a slash. His response was to call a tow truck. I will think twice before buying an 8th. BMW.

Great review. - one of the best I have watched! If this is now a 'lite' 7 series, is it a better car than an LCI G11/G12 7 series which in many markets has depreciated to now be similar money to a base spec G60.

Nope. Chinese copy of a BMW, for Chinese people and other new market countries. Could be a KIA. BMW should just stop pretending to sell cars in Europe for a start.

I sold my F90 because it was so big and heavy. The new 5 is much bigger, so sad. I would chose the 3-Series, smart to drive.

Good review but i feel the G30 LCI 520d seems a much better buy and makes more sense.

Back in the days toyota tried its best to look like a BMW. Today it is the other way around.

Although it looks a bit weird, I personally like that is higher and that the black plastic in the lower body in this regular trim is a more practical option in real life. The ground clearance also seems quite high, more like a crossover. Not that sporty-looking as the g30 for sure, but i think this is more suitable for every day life.

big bmw fanboy, or at least was... this 5 series is design disaster, I just can't get over of how wrong it looks and how cheapened it is, full of cheap, hard plastic. For a lot more money. Terrible, this brand is going down rapidly..

Illuminated grill is tacky. G30 was a lot nicer.
