BMW Group Plant Dingolfing has today celebrated the official start of production for the new BMW 5 Series Touring. The newcomer is the first premium vehicle in its segment to feature not just a petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid drive but also a fully electric one. That makes the BMW i5 Touring the fourth all-electric model to enter series production at Plant Dingolfing in not even three years.

Since launching the first generation in 1991, Plant Dingolfing in Lower Bavaria has been the sole producer of the BMW 5 Series Touring, with more than 1.2 million rolling off its production lines over the years. Like its predecessor, the new BMW 5 Series Touring – irrespective of drive – is manufactured flexibly alongside the BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW 4 Series and 6 Series models, all on a single production line. Investments in the plant for the new BMW 5 Series Touring amount to approx. 80 million euros.

Мне как разработчику страшно представить сколько сил и времени потрачено на создание такого завода. Сколько механики, электроники и программного обеспечения

I worked in a manufacturing company that made components for BMW, and I was blown away by the amount of precision they require on their specs. God knows the amount of times parts got rejected for being off spec by 2-3milimeters. I was also impressed to learn there's a huge colossal supply chain of workers and companies for every component seen on this video. The amount of calls to logistics, expedites, late shifts, meetings, planning, projects, reviews, calls, stress, vacations to take to relieve stress, calls to take during vacation, etc, just to make sure production never stop producing the component. The car industry is completely nuts.

@1:51 just imagining what must go-into creating & programming these robotics (for a normal person) is mind-blowing. Looks like a glimpse into an alien workshop

As a child watched with interest the assembly of this masterpiece of engineering, I would love to work at such an enterprise! :))

I absolutely hate the screen format. No knobs. More distraction while driving. As if being on the phone is enough distraction. And also more plastic parts on the engine. More shit that can break and expensive to fix and replace. German engineering has really lost its appeal.

not only has this been a zen-like relaxing video to watch but seeing all the detailed precise work that goes into making one makes me wonder that perhaps things are better quality and reliability-wise from when I used to daily an E60.
