In many cases when you're on the interstate or freeway, you can help out merging drivers. Sometimes it's simply a matter of slow a bit, or moving over to the left lane if it's available. Often if the merging driver is accelerating as they should be, a slight adjustment in your speed will help them merge. And working as a team makes you a safer, smarter driver.

I noticed a lot of people don't do this and purposely attempt to block merging traffic. It creates a dangerous situation for surrounding road users, besides being a pet peeve of mine

There are people who will smash the gas pedal to close the gap and not let others emerge. It's so sad that these people even exist !

I work for the department I appreciate the effort and I hope you can get through to them. I can't count the times we get called out to a wreck that could have been avoided just by doing this.

Wrong. Merging works properly when the person coming on the highway accelerates up to the speed of traffic as they should. One of the most nerve racking things is being stuck behind a car on an on ramp refusing to go over 45mph while merging on a 75mph highway. They highway has right of way, you can slow down to get in much faster than you can speed up to get in. The safest and easiest way is to get going 5-10mph faster than the flow of trafgic before attempting to merge. You should never have to slow down for a merging car. That creates a much higher chance for an accident by involving all the cars behind you.
