Accelerate to highway speeds when merging, officer explains

Merging onto Florida highways can be stressful, but as long as drivers follow the rules of the road, it would help ease the anxiety.

By state law, a merging motorist must yield the right of way to the existing traffic on a highway – and adjust their speed accordingly, Officer Roy Paz with the Tampa Police Department explained on Good Day Tampa Bay. This means the traffic on the interstate has the right of way.

Real tips :
First: look at the mirror and the blind spot.
Second: if their cars run faster, you go slower, if they run slower, you go faster.
Third: make sure the turn signals on when merging.

This is like racing theory

I noticed so many people who don’t even look when merging, they just assume they have the right away

One disagreement, if I am at a matching speed, and there is an opening I can take, I am merging earlier rather than at the end of the on ramp.

Thought this was common knowledge. No wonder there are so many accidents in the Orlando area...

California on ramp merge technique: Accelerate to twice highway speed limit when merging. LOL.

These are all contrary to one another especially the zipper and regular merging.
Zipper: person in the empty lane has the right away to your lane😂(so they think)
Regular Merge: person ALREADY in the lane has the right away.

It'd do good when those in the right lane would use the 3 second rule, which around 70 m.p.h. becomes a 4 second rule. Where it gives an adequate room to safely merge in.
Thank this officer for his testimony!

Disagree on one point: “merge at the very end of the lane”. Of course it’s important to let drivers in lanes know you are about to merge but don’t wait till the end to merge. It could be considered very dangerous for example if merge lane is about to end and a full load of trucks next to you.

It’s not hard really you speed up as your speeding up look behind you if there’s no one coming then merge into the lane. It gets scary when people go to slow when you go slow highway traffic catches up to you quicker then if you just matched the speed.

I wish I could play this video on every screen in the country for a solid month 24/7. Too many people think if they are merging into traffic, they have the right of way and if you are in the lane closest to them, you should get over and let them in. Listen to the first few things the Officer says.

This is something you just have to get used to. Like the officer said, you gotta adjust your speed accordingly. It's different every time.

It says in the driver manual that cars on highway must move over to let you in.

The ones merging. Don't use the turn signal. They don't yield. They don't look to see if it's safe to merge. They have their blinders on and hope they don't get hit merging. They force others to slow down
Lastly They don't merge at the proper seed . They merge at 45 mph. Really stupid.

Maybe just in Massachusetts, Masshole think they have the right way when they’re merging.

That works if you're a car but an 18 wheeler it takes time to get up to speed if they yield on the ramp. You guys talk all about cars. Do you expect an 18 wheeler to slow down and yield to traffic in the highway. Bad enough people hate us on the road anyway because we're slow I can imagine if I slow down when I get on ramp to the interstate because I can't get in. We truck drivers know exactly how to drive and we always look ahead and we try to get over usually 99% of the time we can. You people that drive cars all the time can get up to speed a lot faster than a truck drivers

Agree to everything but purposely driving to the end of the merge... Why not merge early if there is room and you are up to speed. Needless to say, don't slow down, but only go to the end of the merge if necessary. There is no guarantee there will be room to merge at the end, which can create a dangerous situation.

This guys energy was way too high to educate anybody about merging.
