Just a tip, you can buy spray nozzles that tap into the PVC pipe and further atomize the water which the plants can absorb easier.

Just use a 55gal hdpe drum (food grade) with a loop of hose attached to the underside of the lid with holes drilled in it. You can comfortably fit 35 plants per drum and drums can be stacked. Use an external reservoir, ideally sunk into the ground. Most pond pumps give you the option of using them inline (dry) or submerged. Inline makes them easier to get to. For a large setup, a sump pump will be cheaper than individual pumps.

I love this. Definetely going to build something similar.
Tip: when drilling into plastic, go in reverse and use the heat generated from the friction to melt through and create your hole.
--I dont have a heat gun currently😅

Scratches and rough surfaces can harbor bactaria and permit spoilage. as long as the inside surface is clean and perfectly smooth, it's food grade HDPE. If a bucket that is labled as food grade becomes scratched or develops a rough surface on the inside, it is no longer food safe.

This is an excellent solution, doable and at a great price. Thank you very much for sharing.

I have heard that "Non-food-grade" plastics might contain dyes, recycled materials, or additives that make the bucket more fit for different jobs, like concrete needs to be soft walls but reinforced top etc. And these pass no specific test to say that they don't leach chemicals, as there is no value in testing for that in a bucket not meant for that. However I have heard a lot of chatter about how the food grade plastic is mainly using the tested process, not testing in each company's bucket and that factors such as UV damage over time is not factored into their safety. But I don't know what to believe. I use HDPE 02 or pp05 food grade with UV stabilisation and cross my fingers. All the greens we buy from the store are pumped with microplastic anyway, so I don't think we can do any worse than the big companies, if we try to take some mediocre precautions like choosing the right UV protected plastic, or covering the buckets with something to limit UV damage.

1/2 is the inside diameter of the pipe. The outside diameter is 3/4

Great video. Thank you.
I was expecting to see that the bottom bucket should have more holes to let the falling water reach the reservoir

The lift should be calculated for 1” of water column. I could be wrong but if you’re using 3/4” pipe, it should lift higher than advertised.

Restaurants also get ingredients in large HDPE buckets

Next question: How did you bring the pump cable out of the bucket? Did it come out of the top lid of the bottom bucket?

Do not use a spade or paddle bit. It is the most dangerous bit to use because it can grab and you might be the receiver of the bit! Use a hole saw, powered in REVERSE! It wont hang up and it does give a cleaner cut without the heat gun.

If you need to measure something round and only have a metal tape measure, wrap a piece of string around the bucket, then measure the length of the string.

That was a great video very helpful and how to build one thank you. I suppose now I need to educate myself. On what type of good chemicals to put in the water? And how do I grow my plant from seed and put it appropri? Play inside the pool noodle... Things I need to learn yet unless you have any suggestions or videos

While I don't know the answer to your question (but I read HDPE plastic can be made of multiple plastics, and the construction/sale environment of the plastic bucket could be contaminating them), you could use a 5 gallon bucket food grade bag/liner. Also is that water pump food grade rated? I heard grease can be in non-food grade pumps, and mystery plastic potentially.

put duct tape where you plan to drill and that will keep the plastic from braking and tearing.

Okay, what are the 1/2- (20) Packs PVC Male Adapter for? I didn’t see that in your video. I thought that you just used the 6 ft solid 1/2 in tube that you drilled.

have you considered adding a uv light for bacteria?
