You can also always cut the holes out of the lid of the bucket! Less of a mess then foam and more durable. Thank you though, this helped me realize my answer i needed for the concept of hydroponics!

I've seen a many videos on this subject, but you are the only one to make this project relatively easy.

Way back in the year 2000, a buddy and I sat inside of his greenhouse and had a discussion about growing this way. We had read a book about how this system was found accidentally around 1999. So, we got to work. After several failures and losses of tempers. We finally figured it out. By all means, this is a great growing system. But you need to pay attention to your liquids. You might get algae in your reservoir bucket because the temperature of your growing area was warm enough to support it. So, we added a draining system to the bottom of all buckets. That allows you to drain your system and replace your nutrients. Good luck and happy growing.

My favorite setup i've seen. I'll do exactly this i think, but use a shallower wider container.

With this bucket you will definitely grow algae on the roots.
YOU MUST PAINT THE BUCKETS BLACK OR buy black buckets directly

Good luck keeping the algae from blooming. You need black buckets and a net pot that fits over the bucket to keep the light out.

What if you wanna grow something heavy like a cabbage? That foam won't float then

A few concerns, the foam firstly is a great idea in theory but not so much in practice due to root rot. Secondly, the tubing used should be black, letting any light in the water can be a bad thing. Otherwise yeah, good on ya.

Rather than drill for the airstone... drill 1/4" hole to pass the airline through, then connect the airstone after passing the airline through.

Just a thought, instead of a paddle bit, try hole saw bit(mostly comes in various size packs 2-10inch) and can just be pressed trough and is very very safe...unlike carpet knife that will cut u <3
