How to Become a Neurosurgeon!

My best friend in MS and HS is now the Director of neurosurgery at a major teaching hospital in a top 5 US city, actually his 2nd position like this. I sat next to this guy for 6 years, and you just knew he was going to med school, no matter what. We were like brothers but I think I've spoken to him 3-5 times max since 1982. He chose this path and was fully committed in a way that I've never been able to. A special person, who helped me immensely when I dealt with my AVM in 2021. My HS class had198 people and we have THREE neurosurgeons, including one guy who was a Rocket Scientist before he chose med school.

I want to be a neurosurgeon because my mom was in a major car accident and she was unconscious for 2 days and has follow ups galore with the neurosurgeon at UT. The second I found all this out, I made my decision. I wanted to become a pediatrician and a tragic accident changed my perspective to. Bless all those out there with tragic, life changing experiences. ❤️

i’m just a high school freshman and before i wanted to be a marine biologist too! then one day i got sick and had to go to the hospital and there was just something about it that made me really excited. and then i started reading neuroscience books and such and even though i’m young and people say my mind will change, i really think neurosurgery is something i would one day study

I lost both of my siblings due to brain injury. Some of my family members are in need of neurosurgical interventions but couldn't afford the treatment.
So I am going to become a neurosurgeon to save and pay my family for all the love and attention they have given me 😭😱😖🥺💗💦💬

This shows just there’s a bigger plan in motion that we can’t always understand when tragedy or hardships happen in our lives. How many people has this surgeon saved because of a tragedy which changed the course of his life when he was 18?

As a rising second year med student who has always dreamt of matching neurosurgery long before med school, what’s the #1 and #2 things to focus on when it comes to my CV/application?

For reference, my school is pass/fail, USMLE 1 is pass/fair for my class, and my school barely differentiates between its students much.

Is being a primary author on an original publication a good use of my time?
