Why Russia is Scared of Finland Joining NATO

On February 24th, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to make his mark on Russian history by restoring Ukraine to a puppet state and pushing NATO back and away from its borders. Instead, President Putin will go down in history as the man who made NATO great again and even added additional countries to its roster. But why is Russia so scared of Finland and Sweden joining NATO?

The Russian invasion of Ukraine was provoked in large part by the nation's refusal to submit to Kremlin authority. After a presidential coup in 2014, Ukraine looked like it was on a path to join the West and leave Russia behind. Enshrined in its constitution was an amendment that Ukraine would pursue NATO membership as a matter of highest priority, and work began on meeting the requirements for entry into the alliance.

Russia has another option to keep from having to defend their borders: Be a good neighbor. Unfortunately, they've chosen not to.

Russia created their own monster in Finland. It has a tiny population but Russia made three fundamental mistakes.
1. They tried to invade (which caused Finland to militarise on a scale unheard of in a Western nation)
2. They proclaimed that Finland should eventually belong to Russia, after half a century of Finland playing nice (proving that diplomacy with Russia is pointless)
3. They threatened Finland with violence if they joined NATO (Trying to assert control over Finlands defence policy, in the wake of stating that they WILL invade eventually ANYWAY)
When you have tried to invade a country, negotiated a peaceful solution, then told them that you plan on eventually invading them again, and THEN threatened them over defence policy, well why would you expect Finland to keep playing along with a one-sided charade?
Finland has spent half a century preparing for a Russian invasion, and playing along with Russian demands. The reward for that is threats of an impending invasion, and threats of projected violence on their nation. Frankly, Finland has had enough of Russia, and I suspect they are tired of pivoting their entire country to prepare for a war that they are perpetually waiting for. I think Russia has pushed Finland to the point where they would rather get it over with.
EVERYONE in Finland is trained and indoctrinated in preparation for a war with Russia. Their whole country is geared up for it. They have one of the biggest armies and reserve forces in Europe, which punches WAY above its weight considering its population size. Imagine Scotland ... where 1 in 5 people are a reservist, and they have 100, 000 soldiers. Finland is also an expert in guerrilla warfare, camouflage, and long range arctic fighting. And Russia failed to invade Finland BEFORE it even had a proper army. They have no chance now.
Russia could have just kept its mouth shut, but they drove Finland into the arms of NATO, and that is a net gain for the defensive bloc. Russia is trying to re-establish its former soviet glory and they are failing. They know that they are in a state of population and economic collapse, and they are making their play whilst they still think they can. They fail to see that they still cant win.

As an American I’m genuinely glad Finland and Sweden joined NATO. They’re tough, well trained and geographically strategic. Welcome! 🇺🇸 🇫🇮 🇸🇪

I am from Finland and you sure explained everything very well. Finland has been getting ready for this since the last war. Finland is full of Finnish Sisu and even Putin knows it. I pray nothing happens between Finland & Russia so stay away from Finland, Putin...and get the heck out of Ukraine.

Now we heard the same discussion in Ireland that we should end our neutrality and to join NATO. I must say, most of us now wish to be a NATO member and this is because of Putin's imperialism and aggression. We all know that Russian espionage is operating across Europe, including Ireland, and they work with the aim to wrestle Europe's security for their imperial habit.

The thing is, due to Russia's concerns about Ukraine cozying up to the West, they instead drove more of the neutrals to the otherside - and they still did not get the one that they were aiming for.

Finland: we will remain neutral.
Russia: threatens Eastern Europe.
Finland: we will remain neutral
Russia: threatens Finland
Finland: we took that one personal.

Russia has to do 2 things:
1) Not attacking countries.
2) Not dictating other countries' foreig policy

Finland was already lost for Russia in 1990s when they applied for EU despite Russia's objections. So their accession to NATO is just a formality and political consequences for Russia invading Ukraine.

Another reason for Sweden and Finland to join is that their flags are a big plus!!

A lot of those NATO requirements don't seem to apply to Turkey these days.

Putin has said NATO's expansion would be a threat to it. NATO is a defence organization. The only way it'd be a threat to Russia is if Russia attacked Finland. And Russia's opinion doesn't matter because Germany, the Great Britain, the US and France have promised to help us incase Russia attacks. But that help wouldn't come in a few days or probably weeks, but our Defence Forces can survive that... and in 2021, we had more soldiers and equipment than Sweden, Norway, Denmark or any of the Baltic countries. And according to the Defence Forces' YouTube channel, we have pretty well trained and well equipped defenders...

It’s important to know that right on the border with Finland on the Kola Peninsula is a huge chunk of Russia’s military resources, including all their heavy bombers, their most advanced fighter jets, and a significant percentage of their nuclear weapons. That whole peninsula is a platform for military hardware with bases all in a row and a major seaport just miles from the Finnish border. There is one road and one railroad that connects all those assets with the rest of Russia. It’s a defensive nightmare that would take a million men to guard. And the border and much of Finland is heavily forested, nothing but cover for any special ops team to cut the peninsula off from their supply lines. Finland also has compulsory military service and a well trained force with advanced capabilities and American hardware. No wonder Putin is freaked out. He should be. His assets on the Kola Peninsula are sitting ducks made vulnerable by the geography. Norway is NATO, too and a tiny piece of it borders the Kola. Putin is too busy killing Ukrainians to do anything about it now, but he’ll get around to it for sure if he isn’t deposed or has an unfortunate accident.

And if Ukraine hadn't surrendered its nuclear arsenal, Russia never would have invaded, regardless of other considerations. But the Russian invasion just makes it that much clearer that Ukrainian membership in NATO is necessary for restoration of Ukraine's security.
