As I Marine, I was taught extensively about the Barbary pirates so I’ve regularly brought this up to my liberal friends for years as a counter to the U.S. “spawning” Muslim extremism argument. Another little nugget: any time someone brings up the Crusades as the reason for Islamic militarism, counter with the Battle of Tours in 732. This battle stopped the Muslim invasion of Europe—an invasion that predates the Crusades by 300 years. Or bring up the 700 year occupation of Spain and the various attacks/sieges of Vienna by the Ottomans. These points will shut up the “Western imperialism is to blame” crowd pretty quickly. To achieve total victory, I also bring up slavery being legal in the Islamic World well into the 20th Century and still being de facto in significant numbers across the Middle East to this day.
