Learn the 5 easy steps to mastering calculating % yield in chemistry!

Step 1: Balance the reaction equation!
* This is important, because it helps you determine the correct amount of product in the end.
* This step should be done even if it appears balanced, DOUBLE CHECK!

Step 2: Determine all reagents!
* If you tend be be confused by what are reagents, solvents and catalysts you need to
practice this.
* This is also very important when working with multi-step reactions.

Step 3: Determine the limiting reagent!
* Calculate the number of moles for each reagent.
* Convert to a 1:1 ratio.
* The smallest numbers of moles is the limiting reagent.

Step 4: Calculate the theoretical yield!
* Calculate the Molar mass of the product.
* Multiply with mole of product (according to mole ratio to limiting reagent).

Step 5: Calculate % yield!
* Take the actual yield, divide by theoretical yield and multiply with 100.
