You also could use white as a highlight and then glaze some red ink or contrast color over the white, do this in layers

sometimes mix a bit of yellow and white together with it, just a small amount makes it brighter without changing the saturation much

Couldn't you use orange or yellow to brighten up reds?

Use a bone colour rather than a white, it'll lighten the red without turning it into a pink

Or just use orange and mix it with your red😱
