What is Snowboard Rocker? And How to Choose The Right Type

Choosing the right snowboard can be difficult, and it certainly isn’t a small investment. Every detail from the length of the snowboard to the various dimensions influence the way it will ride on snow. Rocker is one important aspect to consider. Snowboard rocker is a camber profile found on many snowboards, allowing them to initiate turns more easily, and float better in soft snow and powder.

Camber is the traditional profile for snowboards. Camber is a slight upward curve in the middle of a snowboard, with the contact points - where an unweighted snowboard contacts the snow - close to the tip and tail. This makes the snowboard turn better on hard snow, and give it lots of energy in and out of turns.

Rocker (also called reverse-camber) is just as it sounds – camber turned upside down. With a rockered snowboard, your tip will float up in powder and crud. The feel is smooth and just like when you surf, wakeboard or waterski, rocker helps you to stay buoyant and on top of the snow. The shorter effective edge length of a rockered snowboard also makes turn initiation easier, and prevents catching on snow, rails and boxes.
