Shazam is actually an acronym for the six mythological figures who agreed to grant aspects of themselves to Billy Batson, turning him into Captain Marvel, a superhero with the wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. I grew up watching the Saturday Morning version of the show where he used to be able to call upon these Greek Gods and talk to them.

It's awesome that in 2019 Marvel and DC will each release a movie about their respective Captain Marvel. I mean it's ok that each company would make a movie about their characters, but to see them both released at the same time is historical.

To me, Shazam will always be Captain Marvel and that chick Marvel calls "Captain Marvel" will always be Miss Marvel to me. But if I had to pick one of em, I'd choose the OG Captain Marvel ofcourse! He's way cooler!

This helps. I played DC. vs. Mortal Combat a long time ago, and the DC version of Captain Marvel was in the game, and I was confused at first why DC had a character named 'Marvel', and then super confused when Marvel announced their Captain Marvel film, which I thought was only a DC character.
