It is really funny when I see people saying "your local comic shop", as if this actually exists on the rest of the world.

step one : learn to read
step two : get money to buy comics
step three : cry because you got no money

I’ve been reading for years, but this is the biggest problem the industry has. People just simply don’t know where to start. Good advice on where to go. Personally I recommend just picking what looks interesting to you up. Beyond that super hero encyclopedias are popping out every time someone gets a new movie so I’d keep an eye out for those to know the history. There’s Wikipedia if you want to save money but no one can edit a book.

Do not start with single issues. Start with trades. This is one of the best pieces of advice that I can pass on. Want to read batman, start with a finished and collected story. Same thing with every other character. I started with single issues and wasted a lot of money on bad comics or comics I didnt like.

Once you get into single issues:
If a series isnt good with a writer or creative team, chances are it will not get better. So don't try and wait for it to get better.

If you read physically, start with a short box.

I loved this. I feel many are very negative about people getting into comics when, for a long time now, people have gotten in because they liked a character, kept reading and then started to branch out with other books. That's more or less how I started, I can tell you that.

Great Video! I distinctly remember wanting to get into comics, but fearing comic stores because of how they are depicted in tv and movies. When I walked to one for the first time in I had no problems at all, and in three years of reading comics, have yet to encounter the dreaded "Elitist Comic Book Nerds".

I'm still very very scared about the different timelines and reboots. I mean piss my pants kind of scared. I have to know everything and I'm afraid it'll make me lose my sleep and hunger.

Drake I love you man! Honestly, I love you!
I've been trying to get into comics for years. I felt confused and had no luck sorting it with use of internet. Every tip Ive got I became more confused. Last month I joined a digital monthly service and done what I could think of - taking my favourite character (DD at the time) and going all the way back to his first appearance and reading his every appearance chronologically. It was hard and my excitment died fairly quickly.
You are the first that actually made sense with his explanation. This video needs to be the official Marvel/DC guide for beginners.
Again, thank you so much. I think I finally can start imerse myself in comics!

I started reading DC right before Rebirth, and started with Marvel with the “All New “ books, so I’m still somewhat new, but I sure am glad I started.

Don’t read comics, they’re expensive and - just kidding, easily the best time filler, combining fun character drama and stellar art. But they’re expensive- DO check local libraries, they usually have good stocks and full trades (that’s how I started). (And usually library staff are super welcoming and well informed, speaking from experience). It’s so surprising so few people use this amazing free facility. Do check comics it’s a niche, sadly small art field.

For me, if I were to recommend how to start it really does just come down to learning a good starting point for whatever superhero you want to get into and just go from there. I could recommend starting points for some of my favourite superheroes but it depends on which hero they want to get into. If its also just wanting to learn about the universes themselves, then I would recommend some event comics to help them get a better understanding of what has happened and how it kinda works.

I always wanted to know how to get started on comics for franchises like Marvel and DC. Comics like The Walking Dead is more simple because it's not 90 years old and it's one storyline.

“You will never know everything that happened in the marvel and dc universe”
Fun fact: there were about 32, 000 marvel comics published by the year 2009
And lets say he will take you 20 minutes to read a comic assuming you read 8 hours a day every day it will take 4.8 years so yes you could know everything
