The fact it's happening in such rapid rate shows how determined the Ukrainians are, and of course how incompetent the Russian "army" has been. Once they claim back the entirety of the oblast, it'll be one of the biggest victories of the war and it might be the start of the end, this is just the opening scenes.

If Ukraine takes back Kherson, there’s no easy way to protect Crimea. Kherson is the best hope Russia has of preventing that. If Kherson goes, the entire battle for the South is all but lost.

You can see why they’re committing their best equipped troops here, and why it’s taking so long. Ukraine won’t be taking this back overnight.

The Russian units in the Kherson pocket include much of their remaining elite units like their paratroopers, special forces units, etc. If these units are struggling to hold then think about how poorly trained Russian conscripts will fare.

(I know some people were curious about what elite units were in the area. One was the 45th Guards Spetsnaz Brigade, another was almost the entire remaining elements of the VDV airborne forces, and elements of the 1st Guards Tank Army which is one of Russia's premiere units and is usually tasked with the defense of Moscow itself. Plus their remaining engineer battalions are taking a beating because they are tasked with keeping the river crossings open and they keep getting attacked.)

I love when seeing the poor little Russian bots going puzzled by Ukrainian counteroffensive. Being Czech-Vietnamese myself, I have witnessed how Russian bots demand Vietnamese and Czechs to support Russian imperialism, yet they are willing to ignore its betrayal against Vietnam in 1979, 1988 and current South China Sea disputes in 2010s (Russia has been supporting Chinese imperialism there), as well as Russian oppression of Czech nation in 1968. Don't forget Putin's favourite Tsar, Alexander III, quoted "Russia has only two allies: the army and the navy", a quote that has denoted Russia's policies.

If Russia responds to this by cutting Europe’s undersea cables and pipelines, firstly that does nothing for him on the battlefield. Secondly it means all but declaring war on Europe, and undermining pro Russian critics in the EU.

If he responds with some kind of tactical nuclear attack “, NATO might actually commit air defences or respond using conventional attacks outside Ukraine’s current threat range.

These are both very bad options.
