“If you’re paralyzed by fear, you may as well be dead” - I felt that 💪🏿

Having been through this myself, that perimeter swim is killer. Having the motivation to keep going when your oxygen is depleted and your heart rate is sky rocketed is a skill in itself.

"The Master fails more times than the beginner has even tried". Austen I would really love to see you do a MMA class or maybe a ju jitsu class 😂 Also that mustache is glorious

Bro that test looks absolutely brutal! You have no reason to feel disappointed in failing that test. It's amazing that you even made it that far into the test

I had a hard time breathing watching this and i grew up surfing. I think tis more the loss of limb mobility that gives me the anxiety.

When doing the mask retrieval pull one retention strap very tight to have alot of location to bite. When you retrieve place the strap under your tongue to be able to have a clear mouth for airway when breathing. Helpful tip that I learned. Keep up the good work. 👍

I don't know what it is about Austen but he gets me commenting and discussing my background where I normally do not.

I've commented a few times on his videos and am a former Seal. I can attest to the fact that Drownproofing is the second hardest evolution in all of BUDS (Pool Comp is numero uno).

For those interested in pursuing a life in the Teams, and for Austen in preparation for round 2, the secret which completely changed my water life forever, doubled my breath hold overnight, is relaxation. You're likely wondering what the hell I'm talking about? When you are running out of air and you get that first throat gulp, you are only at the halfway mark. No kidding. I had a 2:10-2:25 breath hold. Class proctor gives a speech about relaxing, truly relaxing, staying calm mentally, and my breath hold shot to 4:47. No stress stretches your oxygen. During knot tying, I did all 5 on 1 breath - and that's after messing up my Bowlin knot twice. Just relax. Stay calm. Stress burns through oxygen so don't stress. It seems unbelievable but I'm living proof.

I'll be looking out for the retest Austen. I'm damn impressed you posted this video of you failing. Baller move.

EDIT: One more tip Austen. When executing the tied up 100m, don't lift your head up directly in front of you (to take a breath). It stops or severely hinders your momentum. It also burns through A LOT of oxygen and builds up lots of lactic acid (especially for a bulky guy like you). Rather, tilt your head to the side as in freestyle. Your timing should be such that right after an especially hard kick, while skimming the water, turn your head sideways, ingest the air (your exhale occurs just prior to and during the aforementioned "especially hard kick"). Obviously, you are not kicking during the inhale. You got this my man!

This video is everything i needed in this moment. I have truly been paralyzed by fear and i really dont see the light. I fear even talking about my story for possible backlash from friends family or even here on the internet with complete strangers. This reminded me the one time i conquered multiple fears in one trip and how proud of myself i am in that. I never forgot, but i did forget how to push myself and use self discipline and commitment to get me there and thats my weaknesses i need to work on now. This was that reminder that the guy i look up to on youtube and Navy vet is still working on himself everyday too. Thanks Austen and Very proud of you 👏🏻

Man, that test was I got a little anxiety just watching you attempt it. I can't imagine having done it successfully myself, even with a tremendous amount of mental preparation and conditioning. Props for doing it as well as you did. There was no shame in that fail.

I failed 5 times before I passed this test. It’s a lot more difficult then it looks. Mostly because I’m negatively buoyant and I sink like a rock. The float and travel was difficult for me. I did a lot worse then you the first time I did it so you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself. I’m glad you are doing everything you can to accept your failure, overcoming your fear and adapting to conquer the challenges that lie ahead of you. Keep the hard charging my guy.
