It might be 10% cheaper to field 10 minis, but I bet it won't be 10% cheaper if you buy two boxes of five.

GW: "we don't want people to field an odd number of models"
Captain Acheran: "3 marines. take it or leave it"

But that just sounds like wargear costs with extra steps 😂

I'm glad to see they're realising that a more granular approach to points costs is better for the game. I'm so sick of having 10 points spare on a 2k list I'm building

10th edition is not that simple to new players. Just simpler than the 9th

I think this is another example of casual games changing when they don't really need to because of something that matters in competitive play.

I really hope that they eventually just go back to points per model and points for wargear, it was simple and provided an actual balance to "weaker" wargear, as it stands with Death Company for instance, there are so few occasions when the lower S and D of the power weapon is actually worth the extra attack since there is no points difference.

I'm ok with them having the base unit cost and include wargear, just due to simplification of unit building. However, I wish it was base unit cost plus a point cost for each individual model in the unit so that were not forced into taking min or max sized squads and being punished for odd sized squads.

If points per model and per wargear were 'hard', then I really don't know what to say to people.
I think it's quite telling many, many other game systems are still perfectly fine with points systems.... even other GW systems!

I don’t mind different points over 2 options for unit size. The bigger problem is the wargear; whilst I’d rather keep the simple points wise, they need to balance the options so all wargear is equally valid for different purposes.

It probably is a step in the right direction. It still doesn't really address one of the biggest ongoing issues with 10th's points, in that so many units now have 'worse' options that nobody is ever going to take unless they're emotionally attached to a model. A fairly simple example is basically any infantry model that has the option for a missile launcher or heavy bolter but can also take lascannons, plasma or melta. I've personally got quite a few Battle Sisters with Heavy Bolters that basically never see the table- if they were significantly cheaper than the more powerful options then running them might make sense again.

I think that all models in armies I don’t play, and played by people at the local stores whom I am not friends with, should cost at least 20 more points

It doesn't help single models like the Wraith Knight with only one true load out for its points.

Is the calculator really so hard to use?

Do you remeber the time, wehre we could buy per Model and Per Equipment.
So Low Power and Strong Power equipment was balanced.

I personally find that 5 costing more than the 10 squad works out better, since it is an incentive to go for a full 10 squad and not two teams of 5, which was what you almost always wanted to go for aside bodyguard purposes.

Optional rules could help mitigate this problem. You can charge points per model plus wargear, but also include an option for a quick army build that just charges points for a whole Unit. People playing Combat Patrol or just casual games where precise balance doesn't matter can use the points per Unit, while people who enjoy labouring over a perfect army list can count individual points. Lots of games have official optional rules, and while it does add some clutter to the rulebook, the simple version is ideally quick and easy to convey.

This was the norm back in 5th ed when I started. Essentially you pay an extra 10pts for the sergeant when he has better stats than the rest of the dudes, and this is back when you had to pay for the extra war gear the sergeant could take

Gw doing everything to avoid admitting they were wrong scrapping model and wargear costs.

Every fucking month there's more evidence that they shouldn't have changed how points worked from 9th to 10th
