Aqara FP2 - Initial Thoughts and Impression

In todays video I'm running through my initial impressions of using Aqara's latest occupancy sensor the FP2! I've only been using the sensor for about a week so I will definitely be revisiting this.

This is a great sensor and has so much potential. It is without a doubt a new smart home device to be excited about, but there are still some software and design issues.

I have found slightly glitchy person detection and had to repeat setup several times to get a better representation of my room. Now zone detection does work well and has enabled my to split the kitchen into 3 areas.

Good to get some real world feedback regarding smart home products.
Still can't work out if it's possible to add a device out of the box direct to HA via homekit, as I'm not an iPhone user.

I cannot wait to get one of these. The zone feature is the kicker for me. I reached out to our local Aqara distributor in South Africa and they were quick to respond indicating that they don't have an ETA for local availability. ugh! But if the current pricing trend is anything to go by, I could see this at around R2, 000+ yikes! For comparison, the E1 blind driver is R1400 and the P1 motion sensor is around R350-R400.

Finally got my FP2 working well after many hours. Main points:
1. Had to turn off 5GHz or rather set zero power in custom radio settings of UniFi Wifi, so it could pair.
2. Find it in Aqara app and Setup zones
3. Run Apple homekit app, find it in there and delete one of the presences which deletes in all.
4. In HA devices it should exist in HomeKit list but did not always and had me starting-over a few times.
5. Then had to identify and rename each zone (zone 1 being overall presence-very useful)
6. Then could create automations like Alexa telling me where I was! (My other half would just sigh at this point)

Been trying to set this up for a day now. I have placed it all over but it doesn't show me the person icon so I can map my room. Any solutions?

I just got three of these and I can say they're almost worthless. I took my time setting up the edges manually, the enter/exit zones, interference zones etc. I mounted it 5 feet from the ground on a clean, flat wall.

Pairing them was a pain, but managed to get through that. The Aqara app is super buggy. Right now it does not show real-time location on my iPhone but does on an older Samsung phone I have lying around.

The multi-person detection just flat out doesn't work. At all. In fact, it breaks the sensor so that it doesn't detect any movement from anyone. It picks up ghosts that aren't there.

Hopefully these get better with updates, but they're too unreliable to replace the 30+ strategically placed PIR sensors I have that so far do a much better job.

I would love to know how it does differentiating between species, though I doubt it will be much use in that regard. Love the idea of it though

you helped me get my fp1 set up actually, its so cool with ha. Im wondering if i need an fp2 for the bathroom or just an fp1 so thanks for the video, seems an fp1 would be zigbee so faster

I also find the device not stable yet: sometimes, presence is indicated and stays in that position despite no one in the room and nothing is displayed on the map... Have also seen myself in several dots and had to reset the device to get rid of "multi-me".. Hope to get a new fix to resolve the issues.

this sensor still have issues (found in fp1) in problematic rooms that gets stucked at detected state.

Hi Mark...thanks for the video...I just picked up a couple of these sensors...can you please explain how I can add this sensor directly into Home Assistant without Home Kit??? I have the sensor connected to my wifi with the Aqara app... thanks for your help in advance...

So do you have to use Apple Home kit and have an ipad, home pod mini or other hub device from apple in order to the Aqara FP2 to work with Amazon Alexa?

Last week, the timeline suddenly was flooded by FP2 reviews as Aqara shipped it to everyone at once! But I was waiting to know your take.
Why do you think WiFi instead of Zigbee?

Mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow, can't wait. People question why wifi instead of zigbee... I am glad its wifi. My experience with the smaller FP1 is bad with Zigbee2MQTT where they drop off after a few hours... apparently Aqara zigbee devices prefer to only work best with Aqara hub.

It seemed as if you were maybe saying that folks might have to use the HomeKit Integration in Home assistant even if they weren’t planning on connecting the device to HomeKit?
