His empty stares in the distance as everyone else is in their own world.. the piano chords are priceless

“It doesn’t do to dwell on it”
Such cold, yet realistic words

Not the night flare scene.. not the running in the field scene.. neither the airplane scene nor the cave dugout scene...
this scene truly explains the best part of this movie... the silent pain Scofied carries as the truck is driving away from the scene of his partner Blakes death.. the desperation, the subtle cries in his eyes... while every other soldier is just chatting is what truly captures the marvel of this film... truly outstanding. !

What's amazing about this scene, is the actors delivering the lines, aren't actors. They are in fact the crew, gaffers, camera operators. They are actually passing the camera around as they get into the truck. The scene is actually shot in the back of moving WWI Army truck. Scenes that are supposed to be in the back of truck (as in this example) show the actors getting into the truck, then cut to shoot interior dialogue shots, but the truck "set" would only be half the truck to accommodate the cameras.

This movie was shot to look like no cuts were made, one long shot. But the cuts happen when the camera moves behind a wall, or passes behind a tree, or blown up vehicle.

It's cool and was used by Hitchcock, he liked long takes, but in his day the longest take was only 10 minutes, because that's how much film cameras of the day held.

I love how realistic the officers in this movie are portrayed. Initially, they all come of a bit cold but really they're just doing their jobs and being frank and realistic. Oh your friend died? Tough luck, chap, but you've still got a job to do. Best not to dwell on it, unless you want to end to just like him.

Such a powerful scene...difficult to convey the power it has without seeing what previously happened beforehand. I felt the pain right along with him.

I like how they include the Indian solider in his turban in this scene. We often forget the many millions of Indian, South African, Canadian, Irish, New Zealander and Aussies who all fought under the flag of Great Britain as their respective commonwealths in WWI.

I thought the saddest part of this scene was how these guys were being typical soldiers, dogging one another, not realizing how precious brotherhood is, as Schofield has now realized. He lost his one friend in all of this.

The best part about this scene is the soldiers talking shit about their leadership. As a former soldier, I can attest that this is one of the most relatable parts. Noting how leadership is focusing on dumb shit such as a latrine, and the troops impersonating them for it.

"Show not tell" exactly what this scene is, Schofield thinking about Blake's death and its all done with his face.

1:38 "They shot that dog?" in reference to the dead dog at 0:32. It's not a deep analysis or anything, just a casual realization I had now.

"Rossi! Never in my _two hundred years_ as a soldier have I seen such a sorry excuse for a latrine pit-”

Man you can feel how lonely Schofield is after the Captain tells him to not dwell on it. His tragic experienced is acknowledged and then forgotten. Similar to the scene with Mackenzie, someone tells him good work lad then the Colonel tells him to fuck off.

Deep. Life goes on especially fast in war. No time to even mourn.

Should have won the Oscar just for this scene. One of the best movies ever.

Something I appreciate about this movie opposed to other war movies is it actually shows how young the average soldier would have been.

Millions of dead 19 year olds.

1:10 one of the most emotional parts of the movie for me. Rewatching this movie, this scene really hit the most.

Glad ya uploaded this scene, no one else did

It was hard to not cry during this scene. I felt his pain so deeply when he was in the truck.

This scene made this movie, the realities of a friend being there and then the next moment gone is the intrinsic nature of war and no other movie gives the audience such a close experience to this feeling than this scene right here.
Honestly it’s depressing

I like that the Schofield character isn't completely alone in the last half ya know? He has a really stressful and crap job to be carried out but other allied soldiers and officers along the way recognize that and give him moral support at least.
